They seem very important apart from its 100% run boost why were or are they so important.

They used to be "hard to get" from the Gnome Delivery mini game AND this was during the time that there WAS a TRADE LIMIT, so people used these as "currency" in the Rares market.

Example: 100 Mint Cakes was equal to a Disk of Returning and you would trade them the Mint Cakes and "junk" like Maple Longbows (u).

They use shards to get over the 2.147m cash limit. That's because you can buy an unlimited supply of shards for 25gp each and sell them back to the person for 25gp each. So if somebody wanted to do a 10b stake they could use 400m spirit shards, instead of doing 5 2b cash stakes.

Not to mention shards are super safer than rares as an investment.

    Haha.

I remember back then with the whole trading rares thing. In the end you didn't really profit much, considering you had to fill it up with junk.

They were considered rare at one point simply because they were generally an unknown item. Were in high demand for a week, til loads were acquired..

It was just hard to get. It could take you several hours, and your chances were slim of getting on. It was from the gnome activity.

I believe Jagex changed it and it is now easier to acquire.

Untrue, every player gets one free after completion of a certain quest - just gotta talk to some guy or something. When free trade wasn't around there was a chain of items thrown into the spotlight as rare, Mint Cake was one of them. Along with some flatpacks, and Wergali (Unf). Were all used to trade rares. Also Grand Tree Pods were another one of the items.
