Quest Help! - Mountain Daughter

I've been told, as a level 3 you have to deal at least 1 damage that isn't from your ring of recoil. Is this true? I want the bearhead, and i've attempted it about 5 times.

Do i have to deal 1 damage, whether it be with magic, ranged, or melee, or is this just a rumour?
