High School Rapper Arrested for Rap Lyrics

The suburban teenager is being held on $1 million bail, and faces possibly 20 years.



May 2, 2013 | A Massachusetts high school student faces felony charges for allegedly posting on social media rap lyrics that police say amount to terrorist threats, the Valley Patriot reports.

“He posted a threat in the form of rap where he mentioned the White House, the Boston Marathon bombing, and said ‘everybody you will see what I am going to do, kill people,” said Joe Solomon, who is police chief of Methuen, a city in north Massachusetts




According to a press release from the Methuen Police Department, 18-year-old Cameron D’Ambrosio posted the alleged threatening rap on Facebook. Police investigated the teenager after one of D’Ambrosio's classmates reported to Methuen High School authorities the “disturbing verbiage” on his Facebook page. The press release notes that the alleged threats “were in general and not directed towards another person or the school.”

According to the Eagle Tribune, D’Ambrosio was charged with communicating a terrorist threat and faces up to 20 years in jail. He is being held on $1 million bail. All this, for writing some scary rap lyrics on Facebook.

In addition to arresting D’Amrbosio, police searched the teenager’s home and confiscated a computer and Xbox. They searched the Facebook page for additional clues to the amateur rapper's activities. The Valley Patriot has their findigs:

D’Ambrosio also had disturbing photos and posts on his Facebook page including “Fuck politics, Fuck Obama and Fuck the government!!”

He also had a “disturbing satanic photo posted as well as a photo of himself on a “Wanted Poster” that reads “Wanted Dead or Alive” a quick perusal of his Facebook page shows D’Ambrosio’s unusual interest in gangs, violence and a criminal lifestyle.

The 18-year-old alleged "terrorist," whose only crime in this case appears to be posting rap lyrics on Facebook, will be arraigned Thursday.

If he actually is convicted i would shit my pants. 20 years for a lyric, while skinheads talk about destroying Jews and colored people but that isn't looked into.

 

really, arrest some 18 y/o wankster for posting dumb rap lyrics? i can understand maybe putting him on some kind of watch list at the very most, but this is fucking ridiculous

This is ridiculous.. I'm not saying that his lyrical content is necessarily to be encouraged and I would understand the potential desire to censor it in a commercial setting but silencing and arresting him for submitting questionable rap lyrics online just seems like overkill. I get that there's the safety of others in mind here, but even in duller forms creative control and freedom of speech aren't things to just be stomped upon.

 

I actually cannot believe this, I think he'll be fine in court due to freedom of speech, but then again i'm not a lawyer so I wouldn't really know, but 20 years in jail and 1 million bail, what the fuck.

 

It's all propaganda, do you think he's actually going to spend 10 years, or anything even remotely close to that, in jail for writing some lyrics and posting them on Facebook? He's going to spend a few days in jail and then get let off on probation, there's a lot worse things people have written than killing people and saying police are terrorists, and it's mainstream.

 

What about all the big rappers who claim to do drugs on their lyrics?

They have to make an example somehow. Maybe he'll grow the fuck up.

 

There are exceptions if you are threatening people or if your speech is unavoidable and causes panic (like saying bomb on a plane). But in this case, its just bullshit. Let the guy rap about whatever the fuck he wants and if you don't like it, don't listen to it.

I feel like if its obvious that a threat isn't legit that it shouldn't fall into the category of felony harassment, and it definitely shouldn't incarcerate people
