It is pretty sad to see society forcing people to spend so much in college, because so many people are now ending up like this. Your whole life you get told "You need to go to college to be successful", and honestly that's not really the case anymore. It seems like more and more people are struggling because of the amount of money they spend on college.

    Opinions?

That is one of the biggest worries about choosing a good career and going through college. I've heard so many horror stories of people who go and do years and years of university studies for some prestigious career, only to end up working at Pita Pit or Starbucks for 5 years after they graduate because they are unable to find work.

Damn, I am currently a First year in college going for a Major in History Education...

I know it isn't the most needed major but i've wanted to teach since I was in 11th grade.
I feel like if I have the dream and will i'll do whatever it takes to get there.

But at the sametime it is bullshit, going nearly bankrupt in student loans just to stay bankrupt...
    FUCK.

I'm in university at the moment studying civil engineering (and other courses which aren't relevant to what I'm about to say) I've tried to get a few civil engineering jobs throught my course but I have never seemed to get one. They all ask for "experience", you need to have worked before. To be honest I think it's stupid, not to be big headed but I'm probably better than 90% of the civil engineers already hired by the companies I've applied for and I haven't even finished yet...

Also my brother in law has 2 master degrees in engineering and something else, so he's a pretty smart fellow.. He didn't get a job related to his course until about 6 years after he'd passed.

It is mad, people pay all that money to go to college and when they get out of it they can't even get a job, this world is crazy.

Going to college just to go to college is a silly idea. I'm getting a computer science degree and if you don't find a job with one of those you are just an idiot.

At least that guy went to school in California. If he went somewhere back east, he'd probably owe 5x as much in loan payments. I go to a state university in California and luckily my tuition is only around $7,000.

Just another showing of how greedy people are. A college or lower educational institutions costs no where near as much as people pay per year and I find it quite stupid that our government [ the US, yours may be different I doubt it but idk so I will only speak for my own country] allows it to happen.

The only thing it does is cause taxes to raise which hurts small income families and pushes people who are poor even further into poverty. and whats it all for? So the schools leaders can pocket x amount and put the rest towards meaningless trivial items that in no way help further education but instead raise the entry fee into the school for the next years class.

Not always. There is a college in eastern Kentucky that allows you to study for free as long as you work 10 hours a week on a campus job, and if you are smart enough to find and apply for grants and scholarships it isn't hard to get back money instead of owing money. I think it is a shame that he can't get a job, unless his PhD is something stupid like West Indian 12th Century Literature or something because that is his fault. Currently I am working for a 4 year Paralegal Studies degree so that I then can go for my JD in Law School. A 2 year degree in Paralegal studies can pull in anywhere from 50k - 100k depending on where you live and how big the lawfirm you work for is, while I law degree can do 130k+ in a small firm.

Realistically, majority of this will blow over when Eu and USA get out of their financial hole they've dug for themselves, and a surplus of jobs will be created that will need to be filled.

College education are getting more and more common nowadays...

If you want to secure a good job, you got to be constantly improving your own education and get ahead of the game.

    It's a dog-eat-dog world out there.

Not true at all it is very rarely decided who gets the job based on education [unless talking about a highschool grad vs a college grad etc.] Generally freelance comes to who ever is cheapest and to be cheap you have to already have a career so that negates any new contracting jobs and unless the company is desperate for someone its more likely that the job will come down to who you know rather than what you know.

Why is this surprising to you guys? Theres 300 million people in the united states, statistically there are thousands of unemployed people with graduate degrees. We're also in a recession and job growth is minimal.

I mean the job market is pretty competitive, but mostly due to lack of employment. It isn't about having graduate degrees, but job experience. Community Colleges are rapidly expanding, not so much for 4 year colleges (especially if the student loan rates aren't frozen asap). Applications are rising, but mostly due to students applying to 8/9 schools each.

Aka in years. The EU is super fucked. The USA is only kind of fucked.

What? California public colleges are majorly screwed. UC schools's budgets are being cut, and tuition is rising. Kids are in 5 year programs, simply because the colleges can't financially provide enough classes to fulfill all the required credits in 5 years. If he went to a state college in the east coast I doubt he'd be paying more than if he went to a UC/CSU. If he went to a private college he could get tons of financial aid/merit scholarships (especially as a grad student).

This guy is lucky that he at least has adjunct teaching positions.... College shouldn't be a guarantee for a job.

Nowadays, it's hard to pick a career you enjoy because jobs are limited and your career may not be as needed as others.
