XPS 17 for $1000, good deal?

It's not bad, but I'd personally prefer something like this:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230027

17.3" screens are kinda too large for a laptop imo. The processor on the XPS is sligthly better, although I highly doubt you'll notice a difference in the real world. The XPS has 2GB more RAM as well but 6GB is way more than enough unless you plan on running bot farms of like 15+ bots. No game will come close to using more than ~4GB. Main reason I'd choose the ASUS is because it has the GTX 460m rather than the GT 555m. The GT 555m is not as powerful and the laptop is more expensive, so the decision is clear to me. Also, why they would include 3GB VRAM at 1080p resolutions is beyond me. 1.5GB is more than enough. The 460m runs BF3 easily at high settings.. very respectable GPU.

If you're not a gamer though, the XPS might be the better choice.

edit: apparently I'm not the only one who thought it was a great deal, went out of stock as I was posting this :p it was $300 off + $100 MIR so I guess I see why.

XPS 17 for $1000, good deal?

I was looking to get that laptop at one point but saw LOTS of people complaining about problems with the power button(15+ reviews of problems with it) and firmware . I've seen large price drops on that model so I attributed it to the fact there is something faulty in it.

Edit: I would be using this as a desktop replacement so 15 or 17 doesn't matter.

Very good buy! I'd jump on it. But the screen is very big! If it was a 15" screen id order right then and there.

Well I am using it as a desktop replacement so 17 is fine. Either way a 15in with those specs will weigh 6+ lbs so it wont be light. I also like the clean xps design, reminds me of the macbook a bit.

I have the same laptop Ivy Bridge suggested only the 17 inch version..

If you plan on taking your laptop anywhere routinely, do not get a 17 inch. Especially in a heavy gaming laptop. The laptop only weighs such and such pounds, but with gaming laptops you have a HUGE powersupply. About half the size of the xbox ones and the same weight. I hate it so much and it's the most bulky and awkward thing to carry. And good luck finding more than one or two cases that will fit it..

But aside from the size, it is a very nice laptop. It will play anything you want. Never had a problem with the power button. My only complaint is that the rubber things on the bottom that keep it from slipping keep coming off, but I just superglued them back on.

All in all, I would definitely buy it again but get the smaller version that Ivy recommended.

XPS 17 for $1000, good deal?

When I get a desktop replacement, I buy a portable laptop + a big screen, a keyboard, and a mouse, and every time I use it as a desktop replacement, I just hook them up to the laptop
