Inception- Does the Totem Fall and why?

Inception is one of my favourite Movies of all time. The music really does make the movie but the storyline itself is EPIC and has possibly one of the most mind racking cliffhangers of all time.

We are left with cobb just finishing his assignment arriving back in the states to reunite with his kids. Everything is perfect. In fact it seems too perfect. And so Cobb spins his totem as usual to check if he is dreaming or not. We are left with the last still as the totem rocking back and forth but we are not shown whether it falls or not.

My opinion? The totem Falls. He is in the real world. His children are wearing different clothes to the children in his dreams. Also he is not wearing his wedding ring as he does in all of his dreams.

What is your verdict and why?

 

it doesn't matter. The totem is his wife's and not his. Cobb's totem is his ring. He doesn't wear it irl but wears it in his dream, because he's still married in his dreams.

 

It does falls for me, he is in real life.

I'm viewing this from the perspective where this movie has no continuity.

 

This my friend is the exact post ive been waiting for. It is an idea (No pun intended) that has been spread and makes PERFECT SENSE.

An argument i have seen somewhere is that when hes in a dream the totem spins Perfectly and continiously with no wobbling at all.

 

yeah inception was one of my favorite movies to, i loved the mind teasing it had.

 

Inception didn't hang on a cliffhanger, it just was. There was never any question for me whether he was still dreaming or not.

 

So is it real or not? What do you think and you see certain. Why?

 

Another totem would have to be Michael Caine as he was never in Cobb's dreams. Plus if you listen closely in the credits you can hear the top fall.

 

Is this true? Which part of the credits?

 

The point of the ending is not weather the totem falls or not or if he is in the real world or not, but that at the end he doesn't care anymore where he is as long as he is with his kids he will be happy, which is why when he spins the top he leaves to run to his kids not knowing if it really fell or not.

 

This is correct however it is not that he doesn't care it is that he does not have the guilt that empowered Mal to be in his dreams. He doesn't look back at the totem because his guilt for Mal's death is gone.

 

I remember I argued with my AP Psych teacher about this for a good 30 minutes, I'm too lazy to recall exactly how the conversation went, but I remember he gave me 10 points on my test for that 6 weeks lol.

 

such a wicked movie..I missed the whole totem thing at the end of the movie but it really got me thinking =p I'm going to watch it again before I go to sleep

I never noticed that bit about his wedding ring. I always thought that the end was meant to give you sort of an ambiguous view on things. I figured they were leaving it up to the viewer to decide whether or not he was really in reality or a dream.

Great movie, btw. I want to go watch it again now, it's been a while.

 

My backup was that if you listen to the end right when it goes black screen you can hear his totem fall.
