What happens when I add too much ram to my laptop?

I have my new Asus laptop with only 1 dimm slot and 2gb ram soldiered. As what the ASUS website says, its only maximum ram that the laptop can have is 6gb but thats not true. There has been other people with the same laptop as I do was able to add up to 10gb to 12gb of ram ( 8gb single ram).

What exactly would happen if I added a 8gb ram stick to my laptop, and would the laptop only be able to read up to 4gb of that 8gb ram?

If you have 64 bit OS, then you can use over 4gb of ram, usually. For laptops sometimes the manufacturer only says it can use so many gigs of ram, but it can actually use more. I would say if there is people on the internet saying they have used more on your specific computer model, trust them.

I understand the point that 64bit OS are for 4gb or more ram on your laptop.

But my laptop's manufacturer *ASUS* says that it could only hold at a maximum of 6gb of ram. I hope its not true because people with the same laptop added MORE then 6gb... 10gb to 12gb.. but they used a 8gb DDR3-1333 SDRAM but when I check on crucial, its recommend that i use DDR3-1600

This. They are most likely just saying it can only support that amount because that is how much you can get for it from the factory. That and ram gets cheaper and larger by the day it seems. Even if your laptop is just a year old normal ram you could buy may have gone from being 1 gig to 2 gig a stick (lol that's years ago now). My old laptop had two 512's in it. Now it's got 4 gigs which is more than the max 2 gigs I could have gotten it when I bought it (32 bit OS + I had two 2 gig sticks lying around).
