What effect will the Evolution of combat have on Jagex's income?

The evolution of combat, whether you like the update or not, is making lots of players quit
I'm also presuming it will put bots offline for a considerable amount of time, causing bot accounts to cancel membership until the bots come back online.
This update will undoubtedly have a massive effect on the playerbase. The general opinion is that this update is bad (after asking several players ingame/on private servers).
On top of that, many players have already left after the release of buyable spins and Soloman's general store. A large chunk also left after seeing the combat beta servers. People are also aware that Insight Venture Partners also pretty much killed MapleStory.

What do you think this update will do to runescape? I personally think jagex will be either forced to do a referendum, or split up the servers to RS2 and RS3.

tl;dr: People hate the combat beta,people hate Soloman's store, jagex will lose money, and eoc failed to attract new players. What do you think of this?

I'm pretty sure Jagex is releasing polls together with the combat update, to ask players what's good and what is not. This may lead to, like you said, them splitting the servers up. I'm sure Jagex has a backup plan anyway. A game like this.. They're not gonna ruin it (completely) this easily.

 

i think this might actually be one of the first coming updates that they wont be able to keep online due to the lack of players liking it. They'll see it themselves when the EOC will become permanent.

Also its pretty funny, the game 8realms which jagex made, died a few months ago because nobody played it and the mechanics were slow and unfair. It shows another failed attempt from the company

 

It will bring in the next era of players and thus making the game more popular and better.

 

Depends on when the combat update is released really. Diablo 3 makes an decent updates soon could hurt runescape. Sept Wow has the new expansion out. Guild wars has a new game coming out i think. They need to get it out soon and without any big bugs. Right now Diablo 3 is a mutiny. Wow is so dead because tehre hasnt been new content in like a year. And guild wars is still beta i think. So they really need to strike now while people are in need of a MMoRPG.

On another note players have left Runescape for the past 8 years basically for every update they have made whether it was good or bad. They have a shiity playerbase who constantly complain. I have not seen an update in any game mentioned above that went over well with the players. Infact I haven't seen anything about any game that people didnt just cry about.

Not sure how a combat system like Runescapes even lasted this long. You basically clicked the monster and thats about it. Now you get abilities and thing to make skilling easier like the 1 button drop and now you want to cry?

Basically you are not going to find a game anymore that people wont cry about. It has been like a plague. I know personally in any game I play I go to the forums and start reading all of the crybaby reports I always end up taking a break from the game. Soon game publishers will realize that forums on their websites about their games is very bad for business. And finally if anyone should be loyal it should be Runescape players. What other game have you seen where they let the players decide the updates? They let the players vote for the free trade wilderness to be restored. If anyone has doubts about game developers and which to choose take a look at Diablo 3 forums. Blizzard couldn't give 2 shits less about what is going on in that game or if their customers are happy

 

A lot of people are saying they dont like the combat beta and some probably will quit.... but at the same time, Jagex will still be having new members coming and the fact that they have this huge update, will make it to where there is a large oncome of new members... They might lose money for a short time but they will still stay afloat for a while because they have a lot of money coming in.

 

i hope jagex goes bankrupt and have to close runescape down. i really do.

 

Same, but Jagex's investors have been pretty much controlling the company for some time now and each move/update they make will be for money. They wouldn't make the EoC update if they didn't make money.

 

I agree 100% with this.

You don't make a change so drastic to the game without being confident it will bring in more members. Although most RuneScape members won't admit, the game is too simple, it always has been. However, it's what RuneScape members enjoy, simple.

As a business they see the growth of other games; WoW, D3, LoL, GW, etc, and as that business they have to compete with their competitors or they wont make any money, i.e crash and burn.

Every move for Jagex is a business move, which you can't blame. They have to make money too.

Just remember nothing is permanent. If the EoC isn't making them the money they planned you can count on the old RuneScape to come back (if it isn't already an option to play both).

 

I like how easy runescape is to play, I'm hoping EoC will be a good update and that rs can become as good as it once was, although I'm not sure how long itll take them to do it.

On the Spins/general store, imo they we're very bad updates as is the 14 days free membership, but thats just my two cents i made an account today to simply see if i could bot 1-99 rc in 10 days i had 2 spins on the SoF and i was rewarded 500k, now back in 2006 500k would have taken hours if not weeks of work for a new player maybe even months, which is a shame, if the Eoc update goes to shit, i will look for a private server to waste my time on which is from the release of god wars as i think that's when rs hit it's peak.

 

In my opinion Jagex will at first lose some income and lose players, but overtime they will gain more players who will eventually pay money for members and it will be pretty much the same as now.

None. Everyone who says they're quitting will most likely come back. It's just frustration in the community.

They need to completley open RSC if the EOC is going to be permenent, so everyone can go back to the good ol' days and ditch this new EOC garbage.

 

I agree. I like the way the combat is atm. And the spins and so fucking stupid. They are against RWT, but you can buy spins for items....

 

Obviously this will have a negative impact on income, especially since pures will be useless and the majority will cease pking.

 

Personally, I'm not going to quit BUT I will quit my Pure accounts and play on a noob account just to dice (and/or host dicing if the opportunity ever arises) and flip/merch rares.

Right now I'm just waiting for the EoC to come out and see what effect it will have on the economy.

 

jagex said pures are only 2% of the population on one if their videos
