What does it mean to be Human?

I've been thinking..What does it mean to be human?

To me, I believe although humans might see themselves as "smart" and "intelligent"..It's not true. Humans kill each other every day, they rape each other, they rob each other. We're just like animals who fight over territory. I try to think outside of society, I try to think about why humans try to "fit in", why they want to be accepted by society..Are we really not meant for more? We are the "smartest" beings on this planet yet our actions contradict that. Do we not know how to co-exist with other living organisms on this planet? Which ever way you believe in - God or Science - neither had this thought for humans. If you do believe in god then you would think god would be looking down and thinking "I gave man everything, this is how he utilizes his opportunity?". If it's science then humans should be apart of a giant ecosystem..They should be able to co-exist with other organisms...yet we can't. Why? Personally I believe we are to smart for our own good. Our intelligence is making us make choices that are in the best interest for us but not for the planet. Humans are selfish, Greedy, scared. I for one think although this can't be helped..It's pathetic.

We're as we were created to be but with a twist. Naturally, we're greedy, territorial, homicidal and carry demons. Humans are animals as we are also a species living on this earth. But we're smarter than all the other animals and in essence "conquered" them. Eventually our necessity to socialize created what we have today (society). Society now highlights the greatness and ugliness of being human. You hear about people killing each other over religion and this and that but it's always been this way. Don't let the media fool you.. the Christians and Muslims have been at war for centuries now. The only difference between us and other animals is essentially our intelligence.

 

It means having choices and the power of will. Along with the ability to feel and think, as animals do. But we have more rationale.


Humans have the keys to the world. We aren't supernatural, but we have a lot of responsibilities.

 

How does intelligence and the act of killing someone else intersect? Would you consider me stupid for murdering a mass serial killer? It's in our nature to fight for territory.

Our intelligence and potential sets us apart from any other species on this planet.

 

I think 'being human' goes way beyond what we can understand about ourselves. No matter how much you think you know about what's around you and about yourself in particular, you don't know enough.

With so many mysteries out there that may or may not ever be solved, who's to say humanity isn't up there in the list of great mysteries?

 

What a vague pointless question.

Anyway, what makes us human is human nature.

And we have hands.

 

We have a unique conciousness and ability to reason unlike most other species. That's all that separates us from any other living thing. Beyond that, depending on your beliefs of life's origin, we aren't very much at all.

 

Having a will + ability to reason, its up to use what good we do with it.

 

I'm sorry but how are you going to compare Christians and Muslims as equals? I don't see Christians killing journalists in France, I don't see Christians beheading a British soldier at his barracks in the streets, I don't see Christians holding up 20+ people at gun point in Australia, I don't see Christians threatening to take over "America, Australia & Europe" in the name of there god, to convert to die. Not just Christians but any other religion lol. Did I forget to mention what religion the "isis" are behind? zzzz.. blinded by the media once again people..

That's why it's best just to be atheist and stay out of all this trouble.

You're clearly the one blinded by the media. Maybe take a basic middle school world history class and learn about Christian violence. The Inquisition, Crusades, LRA, countless historical holy wars, countless bombings on abortion clinics in the present day, and so much more.

Here's the problem, none of the current Christian driven terrorism is publicized by the media and the massacres and past genocides are ignored. Educate yourself before being blatantly racist.

 

I'm taking this question as if a robot asked me. To be human is make your own decisions, to experience emotions, and to witness the world from your perspective. Just my opinion - don't hate.

 

Being human has no inherent meaning. Humans are simply intelligent animals.

I believe we really have no desire whatsoever to fit in. Why coexist with other organisms when you can slay them and claim the land for your own? Fight for territory 101. I also don't believe that "God or Science" has anything "thought for humans". There is a crude objectivity to be seen in this world, and there is nothing more to it. There is no grand plan, there is simply reality.

I don't think it's pathetic. It's natural. Maybe natural is pathetic?

 

I think there is a tendency for people to get rigid and caught up in their beliefs of what is right and wrong, and they lose sight of humanity. Being human has to come first before right or wrong.

 

i've read through all the comments and come to an conclusion, note that i've considered this question before and came up with the same answer.

we have to get rid of our emotions, our desires and our greed.

 

I don't think humans will ever get rid of that, it's in our nature.

 

I don't feel there is meaning from an outside source, whether we are a product of a creator or some scientific phenomenon (I believe a creator and science co-exist somewhere down the line).

For whatever reason we are here I don't care. As long as I wake up in the morning, keep my friends and family close and help others. I am happy and do not spend too much time over thinking these things. Regardless of anything, there's a whole world out there to explore and all I know is my brain is telling me I'm in for a ride.

 

The fact that you are known to be above all other organisms, and the unique ability to live in civilization utilizing your brain.

To be human is subjective. We have no real reason to exist but we have set boundaries on what should be and not be done. And right now, it's to follow the morals we have built, control everything we can. To be human means to be normal.
