What do you think will happen when we run out of oil?

I've been asking myself this lately, and I'm wondering what the substitute will be, how long it will take for it to go into mass production, and will there be temporary chaos over the last scraps of oil?

 

No more electricity, since most places rely on oil and fossil fuels.
No more driving, We will need to be self sustaining within our own communities

And I'm sure there will be chaos as people fight over the last remaining oil, but who would want to use it up? It's not like there would be any use for such a small amount.

Either we find an alternative, or our lives as we know them will be dramatically changed.

 

We'll adapt and find alternatives.

Otherwise: huge regression in technology use.

 

We are searching for alternatives now, so hopefully when oil has ran out we will have a suitable alternative to oil.
Like this guy said though, if we don't we will see a huge stepback in technology usage.

 

There are alternatives to fossil fuels/oil. The automotive industry would be revolutionized as we know it if the oil tycoons/companies would allow it. You should research into whom has the real power on an international level. You would be surprised at the vast amount of influence some world organizations have.

 

Sure, we can all say were searching for alternatives now.

However, we have found alternatives; we just can't be fucked to actively agree on the best alternate energy source.

Take Nuclear energy for example, so much people saying the side effects, which are very real.
Wind Turbines, lul hardly produce that much energy but we should set up wind farms no?
Hydro energy from dams, ahh build more dams right?
Solar energy, ahh probably the most easiest way to harvest energy yet we neglect it.

There are soooo many alternatives to energy, but no one can be bothered to find out how to maximize their potential because, "Why bother?"


Tbh, I actually think we'll get to the stage where we look for alternate oil sources in space.

 

Those wind turbines will be rolling along our coastline. Wooop.

 

Were gonna run out of oil in about 43 years. By then we will have an alternate solution. We will have an alternate source in about 10-15 years.

 

While nuclear certainly has the capability to carry the burden, there are some big drawbacks on it. Where do we store the nuclear waste byproducts?

 

I am sure that when oil ends, we will already have another source of energy. Or atlest I hope so :S

 

Store it underground, under the sea bed, in caverns, in nuclear sealed buildings. I've studied this in depth at Geography A level and it really is, the only alternative.

Other examples such as windfarms aren't sustainable or realistic. They produce minimal amounts of energy, even at their peak output, and require a large area to construct.

 

We probably won't ever run out of oil. The easiest oil is being drilled first leaving harder to reach oil that is more expensive to excavate. The price of oil will continue to increase until a less expensive source of energy is found.

Hopefully they'll find a cheaper alternative to oil soon. What's going to happen if gas cost $7 a gallon? It would cripple the world.

 

What about Solar? It doesnt take up as much space as wind farms, and it produces a good amount of electricity.
I agree Nuclear is the future, but there are some drawbacks about it. What do we do if another Chernobyl happens?

 

"Gas" a.k.a. petrol in the UK, already costs around £6+ a gallon ~ $10

This is due to government tax but we manage with it

 

This is happening in Japan atm, I can understand the drawbacks with it. Solar is a good alternative but it would require large areas of land to meet the world's energy needs. Our world's population is growing rapidly and we also need more land to live on due to this. Although solar farms can be located in the desert which is a positive.

 

Well wouldn't that suck.

 

We will begin to talk to countries again with words, not tanks.

As oil dissipates it's only going to create more war.

 

I reckon by the time Oil runs out there will be a new and more efficient way to run things. I agree with the person who mentioned war, i personally believe a world war is brewing up and is bound to happen in my lifetime, not just oil is running out but other resources also. I just saw this this around the net but apparently a quarter of the world population eats over 2/3 of the worlds food =s

 

Yeah, that's true. Richer countries can afford it and so we do. It's how the world economy survives. The world couldn't sustain itself if every country had equal wealth.
