ok, as you all know, marijuana has been legalized for recreational use in 2 states now, Colorado and Washington. i know the act passed in washington isnt called amendment 64, but im not sure exactly what its called...

anyways, here are a few key points on the new law:

so..how do you guys feel about this?

i think its overall a pretty smart plan. they pretty much covered all the bases on this one. the age requirements, personal limits...

anyone got anything to add, argument wise, to prove that this law is wrong in any way?

No matter what the state says marijuana is still illegal, you just can't be charged with it by the state. The ATF or any other Justice Department wing can come bust down your door and arrest you for felonious possession of a schedule 1 drug. I am all for the legalization of marijuana, but the fact is that just because the state says it's legal doesn't mean it is. It's still illegal in the eyes of the federal government and according to the Constitution federal law supersedes state law.

Do you think the federal government would make the effort to bust a recreational user in their own home?

that is true, but if they follow what theyve been doing as far as prosecuting medical dispenseries and such, not much will be done. i mean....heres the thing.

the DEA really didnt make that many drug busts. they never have.

the majority of drug busts are made on people with small amounts, for personal use. and those busts are made by state funded police officers. as long as the state is telling them not to arrest people for pot, people are not going to be arrested for pot. so IMO, the whole illegal on a federal level thing is somewhat of a non issue.

It depends on how the administration views the problem. If it were 8 years ago I would've said hell yes they would, but now I think this administration may have a little more of a progressive view. At least that is my hopes.

And how the hell is the FBI going to know if someone is growing weed in their basement? Even if they get a tip, they need a warrant.

Only allowed to grow six plants in a locked space. Marijuana isn't a weapon of mass destruction, it isn't a gun. Alcohol does more damage to the human body than Marijuana. If you're eighteen years old I guess its socially acceptable to own a gun and die in Afghanistan but god forbid you smoke marijuana. The brain washing of American people is astounding.

This news is amazing. The 6 plant grow law is a bit odd, but whatever I guess. The people have finally been heard.

6 Plants is more than enough for a person, it's to prevent Unlicensed people from selling I'd guess.

I rly wonder what this will do for canada, as washington is the state bordering my province.

I hope weed prices go down, but with dealers taking such a big hit in their finances, they may need to sell it for more to turn a profit. then again, they may have wayyy too much left over and end up selling it cheap because 2/3rds of weed grown in bc is sent across the border.

you wont be seeing any difference in price at all, at least not for a while...
youre going to have to wait for all these thousands of people to grow their own crops first. and either way, pot is a whole lot easier to get and grow in canada, so i wouldnt be so sure about 2/3 of your pot coming from across the border. then again, i may be wrong, but thats just my prediction.

I'm British so it doesn't affect me but I guess I can explain my opinion.

I think it's a really good idea to be fair. I've never smoked weed before just because I've never really gotten the opportunity but I think that this could be a trial run for America to see if legalizing weed would be a smart move and by starting in two states they can see from a different perspective.

what are your thoughts on amendment 64?

Sources close to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency [Adminstration] say it will soon issue a report claiming there are 15 to 20,000 marijuana growing operations in British Columbia alone and 95 per cent of the output is headed south.

-- Carl Hanlon, Global National Television News, 6:30 pm EDT, Monday, May 13, 2002

Canada is a major source country for high-potency marijuana, hydroponically grown marijuana, so-called "BC bud" from British Columbia coming into the United States.

    – US Drug “Czar” (Director of the US Office of National Drug Control Policy) John Walters, press briefing for foreign journalists, Washington, DC, August 13, 2002

"The problem today is that Canadian production of high-potency marijuana in British Columbia is a major source of marijuana [in the United States] . . . and it's spreading. Just like cocaine, shipped up from Mexico."

-- “Canada's pot policy under fire from U.S.,” Globe and Mail (Toronto), September 13, 2002, quoting US Drug “Czar” John Walters

Mr. Walters said last week the United States is already alarmed that 95% of the marijuana grown in British Columbia is sent south of the border. The growers are largely Vietnamese organized crime groups who have moved into Ontario and Quebec to supply the U.S. market with high-potency and high-quality marijuana, he said.

-- “Decriminalization will cause border delays, hurt economy, Alliance critic says: Tighter border security,” National Post, Monday, December 16, 2002

Liberalizing laws will boost drug use and bring more pot into the United States, said John Walters, director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy. Canada is already a major source of marijuana for the United States, with an estimated $2.5 billion worth smuggled in each year, Walters said Thursday.

-- “U.S. Frets Canada May Ease Marijuana Law,” New York Times, December 12, 2002

[US Drug Czar ] Mr. [John] Walters said this week that 90 per cent of a highly potent strain of Canadian marijuana being grown in Canada is shipped to the U.S. "Canada is now becoming the principal vehicle to move what amounts to the crack of marijuana into the United States. This is not about us having a small additional problem, this is about driving directly at the biggest threat that we have."

-- "RCMP focuses on traffickers: commissioner: Mounties not interested in making criminals out of marijuana users", The Ottawa Citizen, May 16, 2003

I don't see how owning upto 6 plants and/or 1 ounce of marijuana is LEGAL. Sounds still more like decriminalized.

The 6 plant and 1 oz rule could be there for protection of the public from the federal government.

what are your thoughts on amendment 64?

how does that not make it legal?
like...its very simple. are there are REGULATIONS to keep people from starting fucking marijuana factories, but for personal use its completely legal. like honestly, ive got no idea how you could get "seems decriminalized" from that.

I never realized that so much weed was being sent across the border from Canada. How strict are the Canadian regulations on marijuana growing and possession?
