If you have your eyes set on California, then go for it. I don't think you should go to Florida because there are too many tourists and the weather is not fun. Winters are good, but the summers are ridiculously hot and humid. Hurricanes also hit frequently. As for D.C., that's very hot and humid. Not the most comfortable place. I'd recommend the Midwest United States, but if you want to go to California then definitely go for it.

This may be biased as I live in the Midwest, but in general the people are nicer and definitely more honest. It's more laid back here and there isn't as much to do unless you go to a bigger city like Chicago or the Minneapolis area. It's cheaper to live here than on the coasts. The coasts are more liberal, but if you like that, again a bigger city in the Midwest would be a good choice. I doubt you'll move to the Midwest, but just giving you some pointers. :D

I'd like to advise against the United States. It is an extremely ugly, unpleasant country. 90% of our girls are slutty, and 99% of our guys are disgusting. I know very few people that do not have aspirations of leaving their state, or even greater ones, such as myself - wanting to move to Australia or somewhere nice in Europe.

    Best of luck Verts.

    Wanting to leave

Well this thread seems it was opened some time ago, but I'll go ahead and give my opinion; Being Canadian, I'd have to say I'd pick Canada out of any other country for you to move to. Not because I simply think there's no other country better than Canada and I think we're the shit but because in certain areas, it's easy to get by. For one, we have really good living standards overall. Depending where you live, there's not many homeless. And I've personally spoken to a few and they live that way because they mainly have drug problems or they want to live that way.

    I had a few paragraphs written down but Sythe decided to go down and I really don't feel like writing it all down again, so here's the main points;

-Easy enough to get a minimum wage paying job, even without school.
-Tough to live without a job, but still possible. With something called Welfare (Ontario).
-We have health care. However, if you live in a city, you could have 5+ hour waits.
-School is easy to complete. If I wanted to, I could finish my high school in about 2-3 months (Grade 11, first semester, at the moment). If you want more info on this pm me.
-You have the option to live in smaller towns, with the benefit of being close to cities.
-Overall, it's a great place to live if you don't mind the cold. But I'm sure where you live, it's about the same, if not colder.

If you want me to elaborate on some topics, post here or PM me. I'll be happy to answer any of your questions :)

Haha, and she is supposed to believe that? I find it odd how many people from outside the States want to come here. But I'm one of many people who don't like it here and want out. I think people just want change instead of the same old thing. I know it's hypocritical to tell Verts to go to certain places in the States, but if she wants to come here then why tell her off? I don't like a lot of people here either so I'm with you on that. The level of intelligence is just sad at almost everywhere I've been.

Please, PLEASE do NOT move to the USSR... err USA. Babylon will someday fall, and if you can put 2 and 2 together I'm sure you can figure out why.

    Wanting to leave

I believe I have an experienced opinion to offer. I was born in Sydney, Australia, where I lived for half of my life then moved to Japan. It was a fascinating place, but very expensive and difficult to get around since I did not speak Japanese and english was VERY limited. Still, one of the most beautiful countryside/city countries I have seen.

I lived there for 2 years and moved back to Sydney for a short time. From there I moved to Europe; to Belgium. It was a completely different life. You could hop in the car for an hour and be in a different country. In Australia, you sit in the car for half a day to get from Sydney to Melbourne, which is only a state over. So it was certainly a big change for my family and I. I did enjoy Europe, but the language barriers were sometimes difficult, and people kept to themselves and to their own little groups. For me, Europe was more about the sights, visiting castles and countrysides etc. I was bored sick of the place after a few years, and it always felt cold and far away from home.

I then moved straight to Singapore, where up until the last month, I lived for 7 years. It was a nice fresh start, certainly a lot warmer and more relaxed. It is without a doubt the safest and cleanest city-country in the world. You can go anywhere in the day or night without fear since the laws are strict and carry heavy consequences usually. The government may seem strict, ie death penalty for drug traffickers, however, it is the reason why Singapore is one of the most developed and safest countries in the world.

It was however a society based on social status and monetary/property/car ownership. People were often rude and arrogant, you would often be stuck behind people walking on the street, and they showed no care in the world. That's how the society works and the same reason why things get built so quickly there, as slave labour is basically endorsed. At the same time, it keeps things in order and it works. I was dead sick of it in the last few years, high school was terrible and I just wanted a fresh start overall.

I just moved back to Sydney for the start of uni, after so many years away. I can't tell you how happy I am to finally be home. Australia is one of the most beautiful and lively countries - the people are a reflection of this. You walk into a shop, the assistant asks you how your day was and offers to help. Little things like this just show how friendly and welcome most Australians are. We like to be there for our mates, even during down times. Worker unions ensure minimum wage is high (I think it's in the vicinity of 15$ an hour, although it varies with age), so we don't have as large a population of homeless or jobless as countries like America or France. The Australian dream is really about owning a house, and hanging out with your mates. Although 95% of people are just getting on with their lives, there does exist the small percentage that want to cause trouble or otherwise.

There are problems: in Australia, we fight like cats and dogs. People are strongly opinionated about politics and life in general, despite the fact that we have it so perfect, we always find ways to complain about more. Also, the country is not exactly the safest, but if you are smart and keep to your own business and don't stand out, then you'll be fine.

But then you have the beautiful and varying landscapes, and nature. Nature is boss in Australia, just look at the recent floods in Victoria and Queensland. It's a small price to be paid to live in such a beautiful place.

Whatever your choice is, I hope you at least consider Australia. City life is great and exciting especially if you're young. There are lots of international and local bands coming in and out, and plenty of things to do activities or sightseeing wise.

Hit me up if you do find some interest in coming to Oz.

I highly suggest British columbia, Canada. Vancouver is a great place, everyone is nice, it was the home of the 2010 winter olympics and it's overall just an amazing place to be. If you want me to work out cost of plane tickets etc etc pm me.

I would fucking LOVE to live there! Infact, if I ever move.. this will definately be where i'd relocate.. I had originally thought about Spain, 'cause its closer.. but BC would be 10x better.

So thanks I guess for the realisation :)

Verts, I noticed your location says Louisiana now.. Did you actually move?

I cant really express a good opinion on this topic but I would probably recomend either Australia or New Zealand. The USA has it's upsides but from what I read, you would be better off living somewhere more lax and lay back.

Based on Birmingham's climate and average temperature (temperate maritime, approx 40-50F average), you might feel most comfortable should you move to Western Washington State, or anywhere on the west coast (mountainous, more humid than arid areas, coastal, green). If you're looking for an entirely different change in scenery, I suggest Texas or Nevada (lots of flatlands, more arid, more hot)

Personally, I'd go with a west coast state.

Here are tickets from Expedia.com, all leaving on March 31st, 2011
BHX (Birmingham airport) to SEA (Seattle, WA) is average 1,100 USD
BHX to PDX (Portland, OR) is average 1,400 USD, 800 USD for multiple stop trips
BHX to SFO (San Francisco, CA) is average 1,300 USD
(if you want a more rural area in Cali, I'd go with Orange County California)
BHX to HOU (Houston, TX) is average 1,200 USD, all for multiple stop trips
BHX to LAS (Las Vegas, NV) is average 1,300 USD (Only if you're 21+. Otherwise, there isn't much you can do there.)

Move to australia, our government is shit but not as bad as yours and the locals make up for it, you will get a little friendly sledging about being a pom but overall i think you will like it here, one of the few places on earth left that is vastly under crowded, a lot less issues with immigration from britain to australia also due to the british empire.
