    Taking Notes In College [Laptop/Pen]

I'm starting uni from sept, was just wondering from those who go/went to college

Did you take notes using a laptop? or did you use pen/paper?

Most of my classes are math, so most of my notes are pen and paper because it's too hard to keep up with a laptop if you want the notes to be legible. Especially while doing long computations using math symbols etc

I took notes with my laptop and I didn't have a whole lot of problem doing it. That said, there something better about just having paper and pen as I find it's easier to get distracted with a laptop.

100% of the time we take notes on paper. I guess laptops are allowed for some classes, like art classes, but not for all of them. Most professors that I've taken at my college view them as a distraction.

Let's be honest - the only reason you want to use your laptop is for purposes other than the course, even if you try to justify it by telling others that's what the reason is.

Stick to pen and paper, you'll learn more with, like everybody above said, less distractions.

Pen + paper I'd say is much easier. Laptop may be faster but the constant 'clank' of keys can start to be annoying depending on the keyboard material. Pen + paper is easier.

Computer. Personally, I feel like typing notes on a computer helps me to stay organized with all my notes and what not . Also, my classes are computer based so coding by hand really sucks. For thoses, you of you claiming he just get distracted, this may be very true. But a cellphone allows for the same distraction. Also so does doodling. :p

Pen and paper. You remember things better when you write them down (make sure you study your notes as well).

I got a Mac before college, and I take it everywhere with me now. I'm a much faster typer, so it's so much more efficient.

You just have to think - which would be better for you in class, and if you believe it's a laptop, could you manage to focus/stay on task?

Same here. I think. I need to take notes. I remember most of the stuff. I think. Depends on what you mean by "legible."

im one of those people who hate writing messy so i dont rush to get things written down and have it looking like chicken scratch, so a lot of the time its constant nonstop writing because im trying to keep up with the teacher and i find it much easier to take notes on my iphone since its just like me typing it out. I type so fast that i have time to even reply to messages without the teacher moving on too far ahead.

I was debating on this forum a few weeks back whether to use a laptop or tablet for notetaking in class.

Samsung Galaxy tablet 2 10,1 has a feather which lets you write on it using its stylus, in handwriting, and it converts it to text format.

    what do you think?

Most of our discussions are face-to-face group ones, so you can't exactly bring a laptop into the circle, although a nice A4 bound notepad (I say bound so you have something to lean on) and a nice pen will do the job. (I got through around 5 pads taking notes, while someones HD crashed and they lost them all for the whole year)

    OMG HI JOSH!

What I mean by legible is the ability to look at it later and understand what the fuck I wrote down, which was never the case when I tried to type it. It took too long to format the mathematics and computations with the correct symbols, so I would try to shorthand in order to keep up. Then I wouldn't be able to decipher it later on. For example, in calc II, I tried to use my laptop at the beginning of the quarter, and wrote down
int(0,inf){t^2+5t-3 dt} which should translate to
    [IMG]
but then you have 5 whole pages of it, with all of the computations and several different questions per page, it was absolutely illegible.

As a side note, I formated that image above using microsoft word, and it took me about 20 seconds. If I wrote it, it would take me less than 3 seconds.

Laptop, however my university posts slides on our online site so they encourage laptops. I never heard of any university that doesn't allow them in class.
