for a file or your whole pc?

For your entire PC, Malwarebytes is nice. If that doesn't work, SUPERAntiSpyware is a backup plan.

Malwarebytes, AVG or Avast are all free.
If you think you're infected, run Malwarebytes, might want to give a try to AVG or Avast after if it doesn't find anything but Malwarebytes is pretty much the top at the moment.

My personal recommendation is Kaspersky, sure you have to pay but it is very good Antivirus software. However if it is just a one off scan then Malwarebytes would be your best bet.

You should never have to pay for antivirus software.

Who says I pay for mine? Besides even if I did it would only be £30 a year.

Don't use AVG. I've had horrible experiance with it, excuse my spelling. Really, all you need is Avast! Free and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Those are the only things you should use.

I use AVG sometimes to clean up my PC, it works great and do the job.
