User Education: A Fresh Start​

The User Education section has been a contentious section since its initial debut, many years ago. Many ex-UEs have wanted it to return since its last removal and that is what this thread is trying to accomplish.

Purpose:

The real purpose of the User Education team depends on how you look at it. It's primary purpose it to write high quality guides, critique guides, and answer people's questions. It's purpose for the site is to help retain site mainstays, bring in new traffic, and encourage forum activity.​

How it will work:

• HUE has moderator powers in the guides section but is NOT staff and is chosen by the UE team
• The guides section layout will be decided by the UE and implemented by the admins
• UEs will be given a UE rank and the HUE will be given a HUE rank
• Private Forum will be viewable by the UE team and the support center mod(s)
• The team will determine activity and application requirements

How it get restarted:

A group of ex-UEs will form the initial team. If you are an ex-UE and are interested PM me or Brendan.​

SuF's Ideas:

• All bylaws will be made public (including activity requirements)
• Require one guide to be written every two months (three months for HUE and anyone else that has a specialized role)
• If they miss the two month deadline, they get one month to release a guide or they are removed. If they ever miss it again, they are removed and can not get back on the team for three months (and must reapply).
• Must post guide critiques, answer questions, and generally actively post in the section
• Must vote or abstain on all polls posted. Must contribute to debates and conversations.
• One member given specialized task of checking activity
• Application will be similar to before: written aspects, minimum of two guides (but more recommended) with only applications with two very high quality guides will be accepted
• If a member is removed for inactivity, at least two new guides must be written for reapplication
• Runescape Guides will be allowed for applications
• All votes need 60% majority, HUE has a veto (but can not vote, only post opinion), 75% majority required to override
• Focused solely on guides at first, potentially other things if members want to (but main purpose is guides)
• Minirank for writing five top quality guides: anyone can get it, UE decides if their guides are worthy (which should be hard)

I think that there will only be one problem with this. Most of the UE's are gone, and the rest don't have a big enough activity in sythe or committment nowadays to be active. Maybe pick a few users that have made quality guides, and choose them, as well as maybe the current OGV team to start?

 

I think it's vital to point out that, while the team shouldn't have a huge influence by the Staff, it should still be reviewed by the staff team, and obviously the staff have power over the team if a situation requires so.

I agree, just making it older UE's isn't fair. Sure they may have proved themselves in the past but we have some quality members on the site who I know would be willing to put their hands up to join.

 

I thought was just the best way to get a few people on the team in order to iron out exactly how everything is going to work and start looking at applications. I'm down for someone who wasn't a UE being chosen too, as long as they have written some guides that are pretty good.

 

IK this is gonna make me sound like a twat, but I'd be more than happy to help out. I've currently been developing a guide on sythe for a few weeks, but I'm waiting on someone to take up my offer of free mithril gloves questing so I can take photos along the way. Once that's done, I'll have that and I'll probably do the full barrows gloves guide.

I'd completely forgot all about that, brilliant! I think the days of the green text are gone, I nearly added some to a sticky yesterday but had second thoughts.

Eitherway, I think incorporating members who haven't been UE with some ex-UE's would be a good start, just to get the ball rolling.

Are ranks earned or given once an application is accepted?
How many were typically in the team and was it solely non-staff?

No. That's why its a suggestion.

1) Yes.
2) 5 - 12ish is what I remember. Staff can be on it but they have to do the application and stuff. If someone from the team gets promoted they don't lose their place.
3) Yea. I would also like to rename Help and Requests to General Support or something so it matches the other two... but that's a different topic. :c

Oh I didn't really read the first bit. You get a rank when your application is accepted. The application used to be 5 guides and two writing bits about why you want to be a UE and why you would be a good UE. My thought for applications is to stress quality a lot more: two guides minimum, but more recommended. Only someone with two amazing guides would get in on only two. Most people would have to write more.

 

As long as the entry requirements were strict, it'd be a rank that is looked up to. Like because they're submitting more guides than the last person doesn't mean that the quality of the guides should decrease with it, someone who's submitting 5 guides should have them the same quality as someone getting accepted with 3 guides. To get accepted with 2-3 guides though, they'd need to be absolutely exceptional.

 

2 long in depth and good guides = 6 shorter, more basic, but still good guides

That's really what we're going for.

 

Glad you're trying to get this going. Sadly, I won't be of any help as I currently don't have any guides written.

 

Not sure what to say other than give support for this idea.

I'd love for it to come back, be internally run, and bring positive SEO/great guides to the site.
