1) A country can't be stupid. However the people in it can be.

As someone living in the USA, I'll agree that the MAJORITY are stupid, although there is a small percentage of those who don't give into every 1800 ad and have read books beyond Frog and Toad.
More people are just concerned with their looks, artificial charisma, and how other people project the image they give off. We call those people "Fake". Unfortunately though, it's a new trend that has become more of an epidemic amongst the generations of today (Especially in the richer, easier, advertisement force-fed country like America)
