    Internet Blacklisting. (COICA)

    Source: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-3804

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed form the internet and not just in the US.

An interesting article about here. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-segal/stop-the-internet-blackli_b_739836.html.

And you can sign a petition here.http://demandprogress.org/blacklist/

I find this ridiculous and will be out raged if this is passed in the US. What are your views?

Just like the internet 'switch' proposed not too long ago. It's just the US government thinking they rule the world.

Completely removed from the internet? As in shutting down the server or removing the domain from existence ? ( ICANN is supposed to be an independent organization -_- ) ... either way they have no right whatsoever to do it.

Its removing freedom of speech. And making it so that things that I might like using, could be removed. Its giving massive companies power over us. I hate current copyright laws, and these big companies are using their power to become even richer by making laws that destroy the common man.

Limiting what one can view on the internet is something a dictatorship would do. If the pass this there will be even more of push towards broader censorship on the internet.

The proposed legislation in Australia was ostensibly to stop child pornography, a policy still supported by the current government.

Though I am aware a little while ago there was a case with iiNet that ruled out censorship of file-sharing websites as well.

The government can label anything as harmful and terrorist activity and shut it down, and simply give the reason of homeland security. I am not surprised.
