That's kind of a tough one. Nothing really stands out to me.
Do you have any specific games in mind?

Have you tried opening Resource monitor and playing one of these games to see whats bottlenecking you? (Just hit Windows + R and type in "perfmon /res").

New games required new cards (if you want good performance). Not 3rd gen like the 7xxx.

That's what I thought at first as well... My 760 [theoretically] performs above your card at the moment (except for memory bandwidth). You might want to look at trying to upgrade that to a next-gen model or wait for AMD's announcement of their next iteration of cards.

Have you tried lowering your settings Adam?

Was gonna say. The CoD series has had really shitty optimisation ever since Black Ops.

I don't see anything in your setup that is particularly a bottleneck. If you haven't overclocked that 6100 yet, you should certainly start there. While that CPU is not particularly a bottleneck in normal gaming scenarios, it will show a slight area of concern with these intensive multiplayer scenarios. Especially considering this is heavily an Nvidia game. Had it supported AMD's 'Mantle' then you would find that your framerates with that 6100 would match an equivalent rig with an i5. its all just a big toss on each side of the fence these days, it seems. Your rig may run some games great, and others like hell. The only way around this is to keep the baddest hardware on the market in your rig, and then just use its raw power to run games it's not optimized at playable rates. Kinda sucks.

What the hell do you think a r9 280 is? A 7950, with slightly higher clocks and a new name. A r9 280x is nothing more than an overclocked 7970....renamed. most of the current-gen AMD cards are nothing but rebrands, other than the 290 and 290x and a few lower-end cards also. just like most of the last-gen 7xx Nvidia cards were nothing but rebrands as well. the r9 280 alone is no slouch, though the new GTX 980s do make it look like weaksauce...

^^ THIS THIS THIS. The game is poorly optimized, without a doubt. And believe me, there are a LOT of people having issues with Advanced Warfare. Patches will help, new drivers will help too. Wait for these to come around, and hope that they're done right. Optimization these days is an afterthought it seems. I mean...my GTX 980 averages only 40 fps in the new AssCreed Unity? WTF? Ubisoft is the worst offender of poor optimization.

    The 280x is a rebranded 7970. Correction, 7950.

Adam, for COD-AW theres nothing you can do until it's patched.

I have a GTX 970 and i5 4690k and get FPS drops and lag. It's not your system, its the game. On my gtx 970 AW uses 3.4GB of VRam.

What other games are you trying to play?

Make sure you have all the new drivers for your 7950 also, do fresh installs of them (uninstall old drivers with display driver uninstaller before installing new drivers)

Upgrading your 6100 to something like an 6300 wouldn't see much of an improvement i believe, even upgrading to a 8350 wouldn't see much improvement.

    280x is a 7970. his 7950 is a renamed/rebranded 280 as I previously stated.

It's definitely the system, there are a ton of problems with this game, among others as well. Everybody is rushing games to the market, and giving out a poorly polished final product.

upgrading your PC is likely not going to be worth it like he said.
I would recommend overclocking your PC if your motherboard supports it. I can't exactly tell you how much, and a lot will depend on your hardware. The amount of voltage, base-clocks, multipliers, and temperatures you get will depend on your mobo and it's VRMs, your CPU and its capabilities(welcome to the silicon lottery), and your cooler's capabilities. Where others may have been able to get 4.5ghz+ out of their 6100s, you may be able to only get 4.2. It's a lottery when it comes to CPUs these days.. I can't predict that without actually doing it and finding the stable limit. You'll want to research a lot and find out what is involved in the process, then practice with small overclocks first til it makes sense.

Like he said, nobody can exactly guarantee it. But I'd bet 99 percent chance that they will patch it....they can't expect their fanbase to come back to COD games if this is the final product of their efforts and they leave it as is with thousands of people complaining.

    Get a new pc.
You can get one really cheap by making one yourself, you can find the parts at pcpartpicker or newegg and use the buildapc subreddit for guidence as most of them are specialist in that area.

It would be a problem with the new CoD, I have a mate in my class who bought the game and can't play it at all because of its shitty optimisation. If they will patch it or not, I don't really know. Personally when black ops was released it was laggier than anything I've ever played and even after the patches it still didn't run nearly as smooth as MW2 for me.
I would definitely wait at least a month to see if it gets patched though. No need to waste money on a new PC at this point if it's just CoD that's lagging.
