Hey guys just need some advice on what to do.
I bought 2 macbooks at a yard sale kind of thing. More of a flea market but yeah. The guy showed me they worked and it was fairly priced. So i bought 2. I brought them home couldnt get the OS to load on the laptops. I went back the next weekend and couldnt find him. My loss. So i advertised on craigslist to sell them as macbooks with no "OS". I found a buyer eventually he showed me how to put a OS on it and bought them. About 5 days later i get a text from the guy saying that one of the laptops was reported stolen? and if he could get his money back through paypal...I didnt believe him and asked to see the laptop myself, he instead sent me a picture of some lock screen.(whatever that was supposed to prove) but he eventually convinced me that they are stolen and that i knew it the whole time. He said nevermind that he already contacted the police and had the laptop fingerprinted to get my information(?). Which made me think... how does he still have laptop if it got fingerprinted(?) idk. I said whatever and minutes go by and he repsonds just send me money and ill drop the case with police. What do i do? What if it was stolen i cant prove that i bought it because i cant find the fucking guy that sold them. And he does call the cops? Im really stressed out and i don't really need this at this time in my life. I appreciate any help no trolls please this is serious shit due to my security clearance at work.

    1. Just because the computer is locked (mostly likely iCloud locked) doesn't necessarily mean its "stolen".
    2. He could have faked a picture is he was asking for money back on PayPal? Why not meet back up with him?
    3. The only way you can prove its somebodies is if its reported stolen with the serial # (which is slim - none imo since nobody really knows there serial # on things).

You should be fine, I buy & sell iPhones all the time and run into this problem a lot, doesnt meant the phone is stolen but somebody can simply forget there iCloud info as most don't frequently use it.

He is just trying to get you scared that way you send money. What normal person wouldn't meet up to prove something in order to get there money back? Don't believe him!

Don't send him any money what-so-ever. The police will handle this case if the macbook is legitimately stolen. You should do your best to find/identify who sold you the laptops.

In all honestly just ignore what he is saying. Police wouldn't do anything as is.

Police in my area don't do shit for stolen goods. You can file a report and they will just put it in the circular file.
More of a small claims court issue then a police issue.

Honestly the fact he wants paypal and doesn't want to meet up and claims he has done all of this is just bs. I know people who have had cars stolen and the only reason they got them back was because they were parked illegaly. The police will not go out of their way to do anything besides write tickets for JayWalking.

brah dont give him the fuckin money. When you sell something on craigslist all sales are final or atleast in my book, they arent stolen and the police cant prove that either, the fingerprints? just a scare tactic, tell this guy to go eat a nigga dick for a truck fit and hes not getting his money back, if you wont bother you kick his ass, any more advice let me know bro. seriously though dont worry about it i buy and sell iphones all the time and i have had this thing before hes blowing smoke up your pass he bought them knowing there was a problem with them so thats his own problem for as much as you know he could have put two random emails on there saying "im gonna get this little shit and get my money back" and be lying about the whole thing, it will be ok tell him to eat a cock.

Just for future reference, don't be such a pushover if people threaten you like this. There's nothing wrong with letting the police contact you. You can always explain your side of the story to them and see what evidence the buyer actually presented to the police.

Pretty common scam you can find on craigslist too, just don't pay him. If it actually comes to the police, then you just explain your situation and they'll figure it out. If it was stolen, you'll just hand it over, no need to stress out about it.

Back when the iPhone 4s was new I bought one really cheap. Turns out if was stolen and the guy who sold it to me wouldn't even give me the unlock code. 2 weeks go and I randomly typed in the right code. I go to get it activated and the cellular store tells me it's on their reported stolen list.

I do some digging and find out the guy who sold it to me was fired from Best Buy for stealing. Heh. I contact him and he finally starts responding and says, "Wow I didn't think you would even figure out the code."

I bring the phone up to Best Buy and give them the story and ask for me to return the phone. I call the police to come up there so I can file a report on the guy. Best Buy takes the phone back and I give the police a ton of information, including the conversation between the guy and I where he admits it's stolen.

Cops don't do shit, Best Buy doesn't give me shit, and that guys super fucking good at dodging me. He's got a $200 ass whipping waiting though.

Just tell that guy to fuck off.

its not that. its the fact i cant prove that i bought it. it came from (Pikes place) for those who dont know its like a flea market in WA. So if he were to report me to the cops it would look like i stole it since i cant prove I bought them. And i'm pretty sure i would get in some big trouble at work due to my clearance. I should of never bought the laptops from a quote "shady" place as my supervisor says.

You are innocent until proven guilty. You don't need to prove that you bought them from someone else until you are brought to court. You can just give the police your side of the story and they'll help you make decisions from there.

I was in a similar situation. I bought a laptop on craigslist that was stolen. When I logged into my college's network the police saw the stolen MAC address and they interrogated me. I told them I got in on craigslist and they were very skeptical at first, but luckily I had emails to show that I contacted the guy on craigslist. I had to give the laptop back out $250.

If the laptop is stolen and the police are able to find the laptop's owner. Then the owner will get the laptop back. Which would mean the guy who you sold the laptop to deserves his money back. You should be as honest and detailed as possible if you talk to the police because you didn't steal it, and they can't tie you to were it got stolen.

TLDR if police find owner youll have to return money, be honest to not get arrested

If he doesn't want to meet up and wants his money back through paypal it means he is probably trying to scam you. Looks like he has no intentions of giving you your laptop back. If he wants his money back tell him to meet you in person to prove that it is locked.
