    University Decisions (confused)

Hi guys. I need some advice on school.

Currently enrolled at University of Ottawa (First year) taking Bachelors of Commerce (Business) and finished my first year. It was horrible.. I really don't understand what was the point in teaching us all these useless information. I barely attended class / bought books and still maintained a B average.

I currently own 2 websites soon to be 3 and one of my website is rated under 100,000 on alexa.com. I'm really into computer languages such as php, java, and website stuff. I only have some knowledge of html but I now realized that I should learn more.

The question is .. should I continue with business, switch to computer science, or learn it myself? Is university worth it at all? Will I be disappointed going into computer science finding it is as useless as business?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.. school starts soon and I really need to switch programs soon if I decide to go to computer science.

Computer Science is a fantastic degree if you can do it. One of the most highly paid degrees (although do not take it for the money), demand is huge and the supply is low. It also teaches you to think logically and gives you problem solving skills which are hugely important assets in industry.

Do what you love & love what you do. Whether it means taking computer science, hating it then taking something else - do what you can see yourself having to do every day for the next 40/50 years. In regards to computer science, though, there's a huge demand for graduates in that field with technology only getting more advanced and widespread.

Atm, I think i have decided to go with computer science. Business is way to simple for me, i have already done a good job marketing my website myself pulling it from top 13mill on alexa.com to under 100k in 1 and a half year.

I guess I shall wait half a semester to re-apply.

If you were just thinking of using your business degree to help promote your website then you are definitely getting the wrong degree. A google search could provide a plethora of options for promoting your websites. From what it sounds like, computer science will definitely be the way to go for you.

I wanted to become an entrepreneur, finance or a marketing person because i'm really interested in stocks / marketing as well. The website were just a side project, because I really like to invest. I'm that type of person who loves to see a $1 investment go to $2. It's just that excitement that gets me.

I do not see myself working for a company coding for hours though.. I really enjoy making money off ads but I can't put all my eggs in one basket if Google decides to ban my account for what-ever reason.

^Google ads or just one of the many many ways to make money online. Pure for best choices of job etc I would go for the IT. There is always a good market for computer science and it'll be here for quite a long time.
I myself am in my last year of applied computer science and I love it. The only downside, it involves a LOT of coding. Loads.

Truthfully I think computer science is a great degree, but to be totally honest 90% of it can be learned easily online. Sure, you could make the argument that that is with all degrees, but really, you can learn everything computer science majors learn on youtube.

    Exactly.

I just think in general getting the degree would help me.. get a job easier, co-op, meet new people and friends in the same field. connection.

I think i will do both. learn most of the stuff online and attend school

You don't need a degree in computer science to get into the field, whereas a business degree is going to do good for you no matter what you decide to do.

You will find some subjects boring, and some subjects HOOOORRIBLE, but in the end you will come out of it with some valuable knowledge that, like I said, you can use pretty much regardless of what your ultimate career choice is.

The majority of people I know that are into Computer Science, Software Engineering, or anything of the sort have really already obtained most of the skills they need from outside the classroom. During their uni studies they may get assigned some projects that they find interesting, but the majority of their creativity and ability has come from self learning and trial-and-error.

In the end, it's up to you. If you were able to, I'd say to finish business and then if you really wanted to just get a second degree in Computer Science like some of my mates have done. My personal view is that if you had to choose between one or the other, the business degree will enrich you more career wise and as a person in general, but that's just my personal view.

One thing I should also add is that as far as it being easier to get a job with this other degree, that isn't necessarily true; just because you're doing X degree doesn't mean you can't hang out with people from Y degree to "network". Additionally, if going into an interview someone doesn't want you for your individual skills, experience, and personality all because you don't have a specific degree/major, don't you think they'd be a shit person to work for anyways?

Even companies like Google will hire someone despite having a completely irrelevant degree (although anything relating to Business or Commerce isn't completely irrelevant) - I remember not long ago them hiring a dude that had a degree in Ancient History to do programming in one of their teams. A real company will hire someone based on who they are, not a piece of paper.
