University claims to have anti-piracy counter measures?

First of all, I do not participate in, advocate, or believe in the act of illegally pirating copyrighted material.

As a matter of curiosity however, the university I am attending in the fall claims to have anti-piracy counter measures. I find this pretty hard to believe seeing as there are plenty of methods to pirate stuff.

I mean there is torrents, html links (rapidshare etc), and even premium link generators for sites like rapidshare that convert such links through a different domain
If you really wanted to be careful, you could get a VPN
I would imagine it is easy to monitor bandwidth usage, but other legal applications (netflix etc) are capable of using far more bandwidth
Even if you could confirm someone was pirating material, you would never be able to pin point a laptop on a wireless network to an EXACT room.

    Thoughts?

This is all giving me the impression that it is a scare tactic which is probably successful in repressing piracy in non tech-savy students

They probably just block access to TPB and a couple other well-known sites.

Either way, it's probably quite easy to circumvent.

If you are caught, they will temporarily turn your internet off for 24 hours, and they warn you. If you do it again they permanently block your access from being able to connect to their internet, there's no way around it. I tried.

Atleast thats the way it works at my university, and I go to a Major State school.

You have nothing to worry about, if you are worried spoof your mac address & use a free vpn such as hotspot.. It's all just to make you think they monitor their internet, they have a T1 connection and don't want it slow because of people taking advantages of the speed/m thats the only reason. Worse comes to worse if you are caught, they will give you a warning before doing anything.

You generally have to be logged in to the college network, so they can easily tell exactly who is doing what. My freshman roommate got a cease and desist letter from IT for torrenting movies.
