[UK] Hacked sky box? HELP

Hi, my brother in law has a hacked 'sky box' as he refers to it and he claims that he can get all the movie channels, all the HD sports channels etc. And that the box doesn't need a subscription, just plugs directly to his ethernet and he gets them all.

Now I've been searching Google for these boxes and looking to get one myself because I'm a sports addict. Does anyone know what the boxes are called, where to get them, how to flash them and all that kind of stuff please? Answers on here or a link explaining it would be awesome.
