What else should I replace along with my timing belt and water pump?

I'm getting my timing belt and water pump replaced on my car. What else should be replaced so I can let my mechanic know? Hes replacing the timing belt and water pump and also fixing a engine leak.

I think he said that the head gasket is being changed as well which might be the reason why my engine is leaking oil.

What car? Are you sure it's the 'head gasket' or 'head gasket cover', big difference (huge diff in price) cause if it's the 'head gasket' might aswell buy a new car. Plus, you don't really need to change anything if it's working, maybe check your filters and oil.

Make sure you trust your mechanic, too.

Make sure it's not just the 'timing belt' but the whole timing belt kit, with all the tensioners and everything.

Honestly, hes been our mechanic for many years now and fixed all our cars.

I don't exactly know if its the whole timing belt kit with all the tensioners and everything. When I called and asked, I just said that he'll be changing the timing belt and water pump if hes going to fix our engine leak too because expensive.

I own a toyota camry 1990 model. If you please can, tell me more about this "timing belt kit". I'm assuming that theres a "water pump" kit as well?

If I offered him to do the timing belt/water pump kit, what would he be replacing and I believe that its the head gasket cover.. he isn't fluent in english but I heard he say " head gasket " or "gasket "

    thanks

Luckily for your model car it's not that expensive. If your a 'timing belt' is just the belt, I would assume he'd use the whole kid because if your going to change the timing belt you might aswell change all the parts around it, tensioners, pullies, etc. A timing belt kit for your car is probably like $200, theres not a water pump kit but just the water pump which is normally always changed when doing a timing belt job.

If I was you, I would go online and order a timing belt KIT along with a water pump (unless supplied in the kid, make sure to ask). Unless he's ordering your parts, tell him that you want the whole kit installed rather than just the belt (im going to assume that was already his intentions, most people don't just change the belt).

As for the head gasket cover, it's a simple and easy and non-expensive job, it's just rubbed that alines at the top of the motor, does your car ever smoke if you drive it too long or hard? A head gasket cover isn't something to really worry about too much, it's cheap so change it (you can prob do it yourself if you wanna learn). MAYBE you should change your spark plugs if you haven't in a long time after doing the head gasket cover.

If it's the actual head gasket that needs changed, that means basically a whole new motor, and it would be $1,000+ job for your car probably. Did he give you quote or anything?

    So you'd need :

    - Timing Belt Kit w/ water pump ( example ; http://www.carid.com/1990-toyota-camry-timing-belts/ )
    - Head Gasket Cover (its rubber that just goes around)
    - Spark plugs (up to you, unless you changed recently)
    - Air filters, cabin filters could be checked and changed, esp if you never have.

What else should I replace along with my timing belt and water pump?

    Thanks for the help!

I'm actually getting my transmission replaced for a different vehicle which will go for around $700 total including labor. I'll ask him if hes only changing the timing belt or using a timing belt kit and replacing other parts around the timing belt. Head gasket cover probably needs to be changed since I have a engine oil leak, but i'll remember to ask him. Its definitely not the head gasket itself, otherwise he'll let me know. We actually just replaced our engine which is getting a transmission replaced but it costed us 1200 total for that different vehicle not my toyota camry.

I actually don't know where to buy OEM Toyota parts such as Timing belt kit and etc. I must just have to use that link you gave me since the kit seems at the right price w/ 20% off.

For any other questions I might have for you, do you think I can have your skype so I can further ask you more questions about my vehicle?

    Found this on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Aisin-TKT-002...ry&keywords=1990+toyota+camry+timing+belt+kit
