Is education needed/important in todays world?

Grad from highschool, just wondering, is education that important? I have the resources to go to business college, but really "cant be fucked" to 'waste' 4 years of my life.

Thoughts? (Only business talk, not computer related)

Well, unless you want to be poor and live at the cost of your parents, you should go study.

College is for some People, and also not for some. If your not dedicated, you most likely will waste your time and money. I have one year left on my nursing degree then i graduate and start making atleast $20/hr which is not bad at all for starting out. I thought about pursuing bussiness, as i am business oriented in terms of my thinking, but i chose nursing because its in very high demand and the money is great. Best of luck to whatever you choose, however i would recommend nursing :)

edit: also you said you cbf to waste four years of your life...can i ask what you are doing for work now etc?

If you want a well paying profession then you have to have some sort of education whether it be going to college or taking online classes etc. Unless of course you go down the entrepreneurial route.

It depends almost entirely on what you want to do for a job and what your ambitions are. If you want to do anything in the corporate business world, you need to have your degree, otherwise, climbing the so called 'corporate ladder' will take far more effort down the road.

Depends you could take work as a steel worker, CNC operator, welder etc. Other wise YES! You need to study more, there is no way you will get a good 9-5 job without a college degree

If you truely feel the way you say you do then it's probably not worth you going. If you don't put your all into it you wont come out with the best results and therefore those years would be, as you say, wasted.

However, I wouldn't dream of furthering my education (I'm starting university after summer pending my A-level results, England). That being said, I'm incredibly interested in the subject I am going to study.

As for whether its important, people do very well without much formal education. However, the stats suggest that these people are the exceptions rather than the rules.

It depends whether or not you get into a profession where you are able to "slip through the cracks". I personally would recommend college but even in today's economy that doesn't guarantee you a job. But I would like to think that it increases your chances in order to obtain one that would pay good. Also in the long term view of things four years isn't very much.

Waste? WASTE? Do you understand what waste means? I'm about to go to uni for 4+ years to study to become a vet to educate myself I'm not wasting anything. Education is very much needed for a top paying job.

I thought it took like 8 years to become a vet?

    OT:
Decide what you want to do in the future. If you want a flash car and a nice house, then you'll need a well paying job, which will likely need a few years of education.
If you're happy living in a shack, in some ghetto. Then no, education isn't important.

It really all depends on how you want to live your life.

It isn't necessary in order to survive in most places, but if you want your life to be more than just going from paycheck to paycheck then I think education is needed. It's not even about going to college either, it's about having a willingness to learn new things. Between libraries and the internet, you can become educated in all manner of things without ever having to step foot in a classroom. Education is about strengthening your mind and understanding the world around you. So if you don't want to attend college, that's fine - but at least take the time to broaden your horizons some by reading and learning just a little bit each day, if you can, about anything that interests you.

Yes, I believe education is important. It's so hard to get a job that isn't minimum wage without a secondary education.

No the minimum is 4 years, it can sometimes be up to 5-6 years. I believe a doctor is 8 years. I also agree with Shoops post 100% - You don't want to end up leeching from the government living in commissioning housing, do something with your life to be proud of.

Depends what you plan on doing.

Most business majors are worthless, i graduated with a major in econ and math which at the time it was a requirement for my profession, now they only require A degree.

Question is debatable depending on the circumstances of what you want a career in.

The bad part is, 75% or more of what we learn in school we will never use in life. If they replaced stuff like the war of 1812 etc with real life situation classes, our society would be much better off.

Sorry I forgot to mention, both my parents are entrepreneurs, owners of a million dollar company, (getting bigger everyday).

At the moment I'm living off there money, I went to private school, I drive a porsche, got a 3 floor villa.. (not trying to show off just laying down the facts)

My grandad didnt go to college, my dad didnt go to college. and you can look at todays world, many big time CEO's are dropouts.

My whole family is telling me I dont have to do college, supposedly "you only use 5% of what you learn in college, in real life"

I dont know im very confused...

(Pls dont hate im not trying to show off!)

This all depends entirely on you, but answer a few questions and I can maybe give you my thoughts.

First off, the #1 question is do you want to do what your parents do? Don't just say yes because you're pressured into going in to it. I believe everyone should be doing what THEY want to do for the rest of their lives.

I guess the second question would be are you good/have real experience in business? I mean I'm not trying to sound rude, and I can tell by your posts that you're definitely not blind to the fact that you come from a pretty wealthy family, so I'm just wondering if they bought all that stuff for you or if you worked to get it?

To answer your question, education is most definitely needed, FOR SOME. Some people are born entrepreneurs (different than being born from entrepreneurs, remember) such as whichever one of your parents is the initial owner of the business (No offense to women, but I'd guess the dad).

If you're born to run a business, you usually won't have any doubt about it at all, so if you are pretty sure you're capable of learning new things quickly and already have a decent foundation of math (Really anything to do with numbers), and if you're a good talker or can sell just about anything to anyone, then I can almost promise you you'll be fine without a business degree.

Also to save give a little more reassurance, I've been told by numerous people (including counselors and advisers) that business degrees are actually one of the least needed you could possibly get. As in you'd be better off taking math classes or hell, even speech classes.

In case it gives any merit, I've had 3 different businesses and generated over 30k last year on one alone. That's small time, but I'm only 20 this month. I also dropped out of HS twice, and finished out in an alternative program, so what does that tell you.

Can I ask what your family business is, if you care to disclose?

    Zeppelin,

Perfect thank you for that. I'm 21 at the moment, so its never too late..
Im not very good at studies, I JUST passed to get my high school diploma. (after doing an online course to get my last few credits).

You could say I'm a born entrepreneur haha, I've loved business since I was a kid, always wanted to enter, might sound stupid but my goal is to make a billion dollars (dont hate!)

The company is agents for the finest products and solutions for buildings.
Selling, from giant clocks (same company as the big ben), seating, acoustic solutions, etc...

Yes definitely, i mucked around in school and never did well(didnt even do my grades) but when looking for a job the majority of the time the employer picks qualifications over no qualifications so imo they are important.
