is this a richie havens original? i'm mostly familiar with him playing other folks songs.

most of it seems pretty legible to me, if I remember ill try and work on it after work tomorrow. i'm also wondering what fucking tuning he is in, iirc he likes to use a lot of obscure open tunings.

 

afaik it's his, but I can't say for sure.

And I'm almost certain he used on it an opening tuning, to a beautiful effect.

It's only on some of the words and verses that I can't quite make out what he says. I'll post my interpretation later - I don't want to taint the perception of anyone else who might want to give it a shot.

He plays in open D, which is kinda fucked up tbh. He barres most his chords with his THUMB! Watching videos of him play is pretty cool, very unorthodox style. Pretty sure my interpretation of the first verse is close.

 

it's incredible how he probably didn't intend this, and it's probably due to number of things (not least of which is the fact that the lyrics aren't readily available), but his singing's slight incoherence allows a number of interpretations, most of which add an interesting meaning to the song.
