Anyone Know About Search Engine Rankings?

I was wondering if anyone knows how the search engines list their sites?

For example, if I want to add my site to google, I enter my URL manually and wait a week or two for the google bot to crawl it.

Though, does anybody know how to get it to the top 10 pages? Does anybody know how google ranks the webpages? Say I enter two key words and 100,000 pages show up, how does it order them?

Any help will be great, no spam please.

Rankings are done just by that, your ranking. Let's say a thousand people search for the word "food". They go through about 1,000,000 results, and find your page. Now lets say everyone that searches for the word "food" goes to your page.

Google will automatically catch this, see that you have the highest input from the key word, and you will climb the ranks. It lists them in order from most frequently visited, to never visited. The ones that are never visited are sites that aren't really worth your time.

The ones that are frequently visited have higher alexa rankings, higher search rankings, and generally is a better website.

 

So your saying you must get actual clicks from google in order to climb the ranks? Before anything will happen, people will have to sift through 100,000 sites and find mine?

Is there any external way to climb the ranks? I mean, I can buy advertising, etc, but will this help my google rank at all?
