Atmospheric Black Metal from some dilapidated farmstead called Calliope. Hand-picked by the masters themselves, 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor' for the 2011 All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Minehead, UK.

Short-lived BM from Josh Smith of 'The Fucking Champs'.

    Black metal-shoegaze fusion from France.

Aww shit! That reminds me, Wolves in the Throne Room had a gig in my town two days ago! Completely forgot about it! >______<

Are you familiar with scandinavian black metal? Some great stuff going on in here.
For example Aura Noir, combining thrash metal into it making... Well listen for your self.

Mustan Kuun Lapset, not so true black metal but still awesome.

I'm very specific when it comes down to Black Metal. Can't really get into anything outside of the few bands i had posted. I enjoy old Burzum from time to time, other than that- i'm not one for the genre.

I'd have to lean towards first wave, because i am a sucker for low-fi recordings, which seems all the more suitable//authentic for BM because of the genres origins. However, like i said- i relate more to the atmospheric side of Black Metal, where bands like WITTR and Alcest fuse BM with other elements, whether or not they were predominantly black metal from the start.

    Other bands i enjoy that have black metal elements are as follows;

Kayo Dot- More avant-garde than anything. Lead by Toby Driver of Maudlin The Well fame. The abrasiveness//dissonance usually is most prominent towards the climax of their songs. If you have the patience, give the 'Choirs Of The Eye' album a listen.

    Ephel Duath- Frenetic Jazz//BM//mindfuck

You sonovabitch, you beat me to the punch about varg

Fuck buttons sampled burzum in this track^^^ its what got me listening.

Uh, what would OP recommend for me? I don't really dig the whole /rape/murder/pillage/viking shit, but I love the composition and intensity of the instrumentals.

I love what cronos posted by the way

ULVER Would be definitely your thing, they started as black metal but turned out to be an alternative... eh idk, listen for yourself. Personally, I love it. A lot of bands have an instrumental side to it, and once you get hang of that, you start to see that the "raw" black metal isn't about murder either, it's all about an atmosphere it creates. I know from personal experience it's hard to get into it, but once you do, you're there for good ;)...

Never heard of Fuck Buttons, but to my ear, it sounds awesome.

Chronos: Try exploring around, there's more to hear than what meets your ear. Try finnish and norwegian bands, we're the elite. No bias, that's really how I feel.

    Snatchmasta:Ulver now and before

Some of the raw black metal really ties feelings into the song making an atmosphere no other genre can do. Now that's really something hard to recommend seeing you're not really familiar with it, but this is one of the best LPs I have around atm, and if you're lucky you might still get one ;).
The song is in three parts because it's over 20 minutes long. Listen through it with time.
