Old Steam Accounts [unknown] name

Hello,
why does have many old steam accounts [unknown] in the namechange history?
Does who know the reason?

Possibly steam resetting names on accounts that have been inactive for a certain time? I would assume this would help when it comes to searching for common names, that way only active profiles show up.

 

I've always wondered the same thing. I've seen heaps of people who have only used 1 display name, but still had the unknown thing show up down the bottom.

FlyingToast's answer is probably our best bet of knowing. I think I tried looking up about it ages ago and couldn't find a thing.
