    The Uninted States of America

Through my primary and secondary education, I don't ever recall going in depth about slavery and the struggle for racial equality, and the violence that occurred during the Reconstruction. Blacks were killed just because they were black and had the right to vote... all i remember is talking in depth of how bad the Holocaust and World War 2 was and how America was the hero in the end. We watched all these movies and read countless books about the Holocaust, WW1, WW2, Founding Fathers but why isn't American slavery a huge part of the curriculum? The Holocaust happened halfway across the world..... American slavery happened right here on the soil below our feet. Slavery is a huge part of American history and i think the reason why it hasn't been addressed in depth in the class is simply because America wants to look like a hero in everything and doesn't want to admit its faults.

Lol? No offense, but is this real? I swear I couldn't get a break from that subject in school. In fact, it almost felt like they integrated it with other courses too, because I swear I talked about it more in literature than history.

I promise you that the books you read might be watered down, but if you have a quality teacher (And not just some goofball that became a full-time teacher through subbing) you won't miss out on important topics like this.

On another note, this isn't SFA material - Sorry to be a buzzkill :x

This is a troll right ? "uninted" ? EVERYONE knows slavery occurred in the USA... This is covered by school curriculum. If it wasnt in yours they werent following what they are supposed to teach, seriously american heritage/history was a hugggge part of middle school for EVERYONE (who doesnt live under a rock or go to some backwards ass private school) and slavery was very well covered... as was the civil war.

Well, Texas. All I have to say. I know I'm being politically incorrect right now but honestly southern states, mainly republican states, are biased. States have their own regulations on education and can in fact affect the curriculum of schools. So I think it really is just where you live. In New York, curriculum covers a wide range of many controversial topics but seeing as its a school from Texas, I would assume that the curriculum is more conservative in terms of controversial topics and generally Pro-American as well as not showing the "south" in a bad light.

I am sorry, but your high school sounds very very bad, as it has not taught you about slavery at all or about how to use their, there and they're properly.

I face palmed when I read this.

Time to get banned again boys and girls.

No wonder. Texas. You might as well get a GED in some shit state as it looks better on an application than a Texas high school diploma.

That isn't true and is just spreading a stereotype.

I live in Virginia and we learned about Slavery from the 4th to the 11th grade. Except the one year I wasn't required to take a history class. I mean it was pounded into our heads about the slavery triangle, the dutch slavetraders, how bad plantations were, and all of the rest of that. I much prefer World War II because the issue of slavery became so monotonous because it was essentially 1/3rd of the classes that covered. So I am not sure what schools you went to, but we learned about slavery.

Racist in what light? Because I can't tell you how many times I've been called a "Cracker" or something by a black dude.

I think this might be the most bias sentence to ever see SFA. First off bud, I'd like to say statistically I believe California ranks below the great state of Tejas.

But I'd also like to add by saying that education is relative to where you live. You're going to get a better education if you're in Richy Rich's neighborhood as opposed to the pig pin. I don't care if you live in pheonix arizona, all the way to Tacoma, philidelphia, atlanta, LA

Oh dear that's a shame. The slavery in America is a giant part of its history, and I'm really glad you're learning about it now :): it not only impacted us socially, but it partly explains how we developed as a country economically.

Unfortunately I don't think this thread is really going anywhere nor is it SFA material, so I think I'll have to lock this thread.
