The Philosophical Thread. Expand your Intelligence.

Philosophy has been practiced for thousands of years by men known the be the smartest to set foot on this earth including Socrates Aristotle and Plato with estimated IQs of 140 - 181.

The dictionary.com definition of philosophy - the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct.

Here I will be posting some philosophical matters for you to read thoroughly think about and respond to. Please do not post non-sense as it will be reported for spam.

Don't be afraid to share your ideas no matter how crazy they sound if you strongly believe it, who cares if someone tells you "th4ts dumb n3wb" because if you think about it the human race knows practically nothing compared to what the universe has to offer. It is also encouraged you post your own philosophical matters for others to respond to, don't just respond to my own matters.

It is shown that the studying philosophy, works all parts of your brain at once including memory, problem solving, logic etc. Think of it this way, if your at a gym instead of working your arms legs chest shoulders and back in all different workouts philosophy gets all of it done at once.

    My first philosophical matter.

Time travel. there are many theories in how this works. there have been theories that blackholes in space are a cause of time travel. In July 1943, the destroyer U.S.S. Eldridge tried an unthinkable task. the ship was going to attempt to bend light around the ship causing it to be invisible to the human eye. in the attempt the elderidge was in the Philadelphia naval shipyard. once they attempted to bend light they disappeared in the blink of an eye. later that day the ship was reported to the naval shipyard to be seen in Norfolk VA 20 minutes before the experiment took place (375 miles away). The theory on this was the Elderidge was teleported say an 2 hours back into time. it then took them an hour and 40 minutes to get to Norfolk where they were spotted. After seeing the effect of the experiment the US government quickly hid all evidence of this ever happening and denies it took place.

From these two hypothesii you may or may not believe in time travel however if you do read on.

Now say in year 2040 we have mastered time travel. we all have time machines. my sister one day decides to go back to year 1900/ once she is gone my mother asks me "where is your sister?" and i respond with a simple "it's 2040 now but she is in year 1900" doesn't this mean year 1900 and 2040 are happening at the same time?

Think about it - the year you were born is currently happening. the date you first learned to walk is currently happening. the moment you meet your fate is currently happening.

    Matter # 2

While dreams may seem to last you hours upon hours the longest recorded dream was 10 minutes. dreams are a fascinating subject. while in reality 8 hours have past your mind has put together hundreds upon hundreds of dreams together only a few of which you remember when you wake up. now im sure all of us have had a dream that seemed so real we thought it was most commonly a nightmare in which we wake up in a cold sweat ( for a dream to put you in a cold sweat, it must seem pretty real ).

Science has now put together ways to chemically induce a human being into a coma for about 10 days. in these 10 days it has been recorded possible to dream only one dream. if a an average one minute dream seems to last about 2 hours imagine how long a 10 day dream would be. enough to last about a thousand years, more than a life time. it'd be a second chance at life now think about this possibility. You are in a dream right now in reality you are someone completely different laying in a hospital bed in a coma.

Buddhist monks are know for their special abilities to do special things no other humans can do like control body temperature or see while blindfolded etc. (VERY interesting topic.) when asked how they do these things if you are lucky enough to get an answer the response will most likely be "this does not exist". there you go. just one piece of evidence leading to the dream theory.

    Matter # 3
(keep in mind not all that i post i believe in. this is purely to get you all thinking)

Platos cave. (my some of my own thoughts added in)

There are men trapped in a dark dreary cave all chained up to chairs. they are able to live without any means of water or food. behind the chairs there is a fire that gives off descent light and a civilization that lives by the fire. all the men that are chained up are ever able to see are shadows. they see shadows of cats, dogs, humans, house everything a civilization would have. one day a man chained up get loose. he rids his chains and escapes the cave. he is introduced to the real world he sees everything for the first time as the way most people now see it. he sees color. he sees real animals brown horses white cows etc. Surely this man wouldnt want to go back to this cave of his where he saw so little as it really was and if he did he'd be though of as crazy

sure back when he was in the cave he thought this was the only way of life because he knew no other. cant this happen to us? one second your reading this thread on your computer then something comes and takes you. you dont knwo where your going you don't know where you are but suddenly you see everything different. you see the reality a whole new way in which i cannot describe simply because i have never seen this reality. you dont want to come back to the others because you enjoy the new sights and fear youd be locked in a looney bin.

how do we know that what you are doing right now. reading this thread by me on your computer is not reality?

Sike, Just messing with you, on the topic of speeding up or going back in time, we would have to stop time from being a constant which is impossible. (if you have and idea plz say so)

And if all evidence was sealed, how do you know of this and how do we know it was accurate?

First off the Eldridge is a myth according to the History Channel and my thoughts on time travel are that if it existed wouldn't we realize it from seeing people from the future who already have the technology? As far as dimensions and all that, it is beyond me.

that could very well be true. all time is happening at the same time. no one truelly knows for sure about time travel, yet alone time itself. its a very sketchy subject.

Time travel is pure speculation. No "theories" can logically be made... only the imaginative fiction of people's minds.
I have some ideas, but it's pointless. -_-

Light Can be bent easily which is why we can see the light from the sun when an eclipse occurs, simply physics seeing as light is considered both a partical and a beam, gravity can act upon it. so i don't see how bending light would cause time Travel. Aside from that, how could a ship create a gravitic pull sufficient enough to bend light around it, without crushing itself inwards due to its hollowness o.0 that just seems absurd.

Yeah time travel would be crazy and i believe that Blackholes are connected to time travel or to a different area in space because black holes are essentially immense masses occupying a small area of space, so seeing as light cannot escape Black holes, the gravitic pull would make matter travelling toward its center travel faster than the speed of light, thus travelling forward in time. But since black holes have such an infinite gravitic pull that even light cannot escape, to be able to get out would be simply unfathomable. Unless of course at the very center of the Black hole the weight became so enormous that it ripped a hole in space/time to another point in space (or dimension), like a wormhole, which would mean by being yanked to the center of the Black Hole you would have travelled forward in time and if in fact the center was a 'gateway' to another region you would end up in another area, in the future. It also seems very crazy, yet believable, that All time is happening at the same time, but at different times.

I base these ideas off of some of the stuff i learned in my Physics class and have integrated my beliefs and a little imagination into what i said.

Also if someone feels the urge to ridicule what i have said, please do not just say something utterly moronic and just end there, at least post something of reasonable thought to counter it.

I also read in various places that some Hypothesis which have been mustered up by various physicists all obey with the Laws of Physics and appear to be plausible, the only problem is Not having the correct technology to put it to test.

Something that would gave me a headache to think about The Z.

Your last point intrigued me, I don't think we could ever time travel because of it. The way the continum works means that 1900 and 2040 cannot be happening at the same time, unless something drastic was created to allow time to easily flow at different intervals in two places.

I don't know if what I just said makes sense, but I've got a headache now. Thanks for that :p

it did make sense dont worry. but like i said no one truely knows. 2040 and now could be happening, but everytime we change our "fate" or make a descion the future changes. there could be a infinint futures. meaning there are so many changes that we make or didnt make. see it this way. you have 2 choices, one to take a apple from someone, or dont take it. if you take it, your future changes, if you dont, your future changes again. basically the butterfly affect (if youve ever seen the movie) - edit, the future is never set in stone.

I've heard of that, yet I have yet to see any conclusive proof that it actually happened.

I have alone heard speculation from friends that it happened and none of them can provide proof, I am sure it was something else. And 2040 as an estimation to complete a trail and master time travel is the worst prediction I have ever heard.

It could be. There could be an infinite instances of "time" occurring simultaneously. Just merely in different place on the continuum.
You can picture it like a river (with a constant flow rate being like the rate of time). If you put two objects in the river, they'll both float forward, and the one will eventually reach the latter's position (at least in one dimension, so lets say it's a one-dimensional river)... but that doesn't mean both are moving in the same place, of course.
I think it's possible to move through time "freely". However, by the very nature of the time continuum, it'd seem to me that nothing can exist in the future that didn't exist in the past (and vice versa). Therefore, you cannot merely take an instance of an object and move it from one place in time to another (cut & paste ;)), creating two instances of the same object, so you could essentially visit yourself in the past/future. Seems to me that, if that were to be done, everything would instantly snowball into complete corruption. As to what that'd bring... who knows???... some kind of state of seemingly nonexistence?
But as I said, I think it's possible to move through time freely. And to expand that, I think it's possible to do without the corruption. However, they'd be essentially no influence on the continuum. So it'd seem to never have even occurred, perhaps having simply shifting the state of an object to it's original form (in the case of going to the past). Therefore, I don't see much of a point to it.
HOWEVER, notice I said "essentially no influence". There could possibly be a purpose in manipulating the independent features of the 4th dimension (assuming that to be time, which I actually don't believe to be the case... but I digress). This would be much like the z-axis of the 3rd dimension. When you change an objects position on the z-axis, it essentially has no effect on the 2nd.
I hate talking about these things (but I like thinking about them)... too troublesome to try to explain the abstract while not being linguistically adept.

Alright guys thanks for the replies. some of you were just dumb founded or didn't want to accept my ideas but for the rest of you who attempted to contribute knowledge to this thread thank you.

I am just adding a new matter now if anyone would like to read it it will be editted in my first post.

That dream theory was really mind opening. It makes you wonder if the world we are living is now is part of a "Dream", when we die, would we wake up from the dream? (Very Matrix but that film had good ideas)

I think due to the fact that, what is it, 60% of our brains are not used by our bodies ever, it is very possible that we can train ourselves to do tasks we were never able to complete before such as what you mentioned with the buddist monks.

well actually the matrix 1 (or 2) i believe was almost based on this philosophical theory (matter # 2).

remember to check in this thread from time to time as i will be constantly adding matters to think about. and don't forget if you have any philosophical problems dont be afraid to post them up and if its good ill edit it into my original post!

If this was all one person's dream then we would all just be the part of one person's mind, each of us would be imaginary whilst that one person is fathoming up our existences so what we do and such would be linked to what that person knows and what they believe. Unless of course we are each different individuals who are somehow able to link telepathically on a subconcious level and share the same dream.

It just seems very odd for that to be possible. Also if this was a dream and i (or someone else) was dreaming of our current world, then the coma-induced patients being used for science in 'this current dream' would be having dreams within that one person's dream. The scale that that this could go on is infinite o.0

yes. but how do you know that the people you see do really exist? you dont. I am not making this thread to teach people who i believe do not exist. i am trying to get though provoking feedback to expand my intelligence.

and second. ok. yes it could be a dream inside a dream inside a dream etc. ... so?

So, it would mean that all the believers and non-believers would be here just for the sheer pleasure or horror of the original person, everything that we have learned or ever learn would be based on the knowledge and imagination that the original person would be allowing at the subconscious level. And what you just said would have been determined by the personality given to the imaginary character either willingly or unwillingly by that person, same goes for what i just said. My point is that there would be multiple 'realities' within a dream since each of those people dreaming within a dream would be dreaming of characters whom thought they were in existence.

Why would we see people form he future? Infact why would they come to the 2000's. Not as if anything good happens in our time.

Also about dreams ive never really thought about them and i have to say i have never had a nightmare since i was 6. When i started puberty a few years ago thats when the best dreams of your life start kicking in.

EDIT: Uhmm i just noticed the double post i have no idea how that happened. Sorry.

Time travel to me seems impossible.A quote i often use from stephen hawkin's book "a brief history of time", states, "we measure time in the direction disorder increases", if this is true, then in order to go back in time, you must increase order in the universe, which is impossible. Some say gravity holds time in its essence, but you must look at what time realy is. When you get sucked into a black hole, does the direction in which disorder in the universe increases change? The answer is probably not.
