The most controversial update in Runescape

With all the good and bad updates this game has brought to us, which do you think was the most controversial of them all?

I'm going to say the Evolution of Combat. This was probably on par with the removal of wilderness, but it had a much bigger impact on the game itself. Changing the game almost completely even with all the negative feedback given. I'm pretty sure Jagex thought it would be proficuous to indite this act of an evolution of the game that would bring more players and variety. Both being wrong, runescape is barely holding on to the player base it currently has.

Which update was the most controversial to you?

It has to be the Evolution of Combat. So many people disliked the system and quit because of it (myself included.)

Okay I definitely agree it was EOC. I think Squeal of Fortune should be runner up. Basically brought a way to RWT without breaking any rules.

Contrary to popular belief, I actually support the evolution of combat. Sure there are always skeptics who view change as being bad! I have to argue the opposite, change is good. If the same version of the game was continuously played there would be nothing more to it. The new combat triangle has opened up the pvm world significantly and boosted some previously weaker combat styles.

It took some getting used to, but now I'm blessed the way the game looks and is played!

Worst update? Recently they decided to make virtus wand and book degradable and make NEX deflect magic attacks, I lost like 100m+ on my virtus set crashing..

EoC needed to be tested way more.

EoC and the graphical update of armors just killed it for me

i personally think runescape reached its peak just before EoC. i never used summoning, but it was still cool. staking was so much fun, and the game was at an all time high for me and i played since classic.

07 was cool to bring back, but as i said, if they would had just brought back "runescape before eoc" would had been fine with me. even the weapons they had just before eoc, like magic shortbow with zamorak arrows, that stuff was so dope. pking was even more fun than what it is now; i loved hybridding in old bounty hunter, which was same as before eoc.

but, whatever. i've quit since u cant pid hug in 07 staking and i may get back into pid hug staking in rs3, but atm im just gonna make money with my gold shops.

for jagexs point of view, i completely see where they're coming from. yeah, the loyal players are gonna be upset, but the updates they are making are favoring what most mmorpg users like playing, such as leage of legends/world of warcraft. they want a bigger fanbase, and runescape wasn't really going anywhere as far as growing in popularity, if anything, it was declining. if i was the ceo, fuck the game, i want more players/money.

for the players, it was a tragic experience with eoc, but for jagex the company, it's a success in the makin. not that they aren't now, but the updates they are making are definitely leaning towards what most mmorpg players favor.

Jagex's point of view may have seemed logically sound, but it was incorrect. Runescape had ORIGINALITY. Its combat system was ORIGINAL and unique. If people wanted to play your standard cookie cutter MMORPG, they'd play World of Warcraft, a game that has mastered that type of combat. I like both games, and liked having the difference between the two.

When Jagex released EoC, it was not just a middle finger to the players. It was basically a middle finger to the original creators of the game, Andrew and Paul Gower. Let us not forget an American company took over Jagex however long back, and they have been the driving minds behind bullshit such as microtransactions and quite possibly also helped spur on the Evolution of Combat, or better referred to as the End of Combat. While I'm not THAT extreme towards EoC, it did certainly strip Runescape of any originality it had. As banal and bland as it seemed (the old combat), it worked, and it actually was, weirdly, addicting and original.

The armor graphical updates still is what pisses me off the most, though, even more than EoC. It made the game so damn ugly. Not to mention I don't know what the flying frick any item is any more. It could be a cosmetic or an original armor piece and I wouldn't efin know which it is.

Kudos to them for making old replica armor sets for us to have as overrides. Now I want a buff to momentum so that non EoC enthusiasts can play the game more old-school without having to be severely punished as to the damage they give out whilst using it.

The most controversial update in Runescape

the most controversial updates, in my opinion, were:

    1. climbing boots being changed to 76k alch. This made some people who knew in advance, or simply bots who stock piled on these, overnight billionaires.

    2. the corp beast ring of wealth bug that made a sigil drop every kill. This was abused for like 2 hours and no rollbacks were made, or bans.

I think Jagex said they checked the amount of climbing boots in peoples banks to make sure nobody profited that unfairly over this. I probably can't find it now, but it was posted in the forums by Jmods

My most controversial update was RSC to RS2. I hated it. I loved RSC and the difficulties of it. I mean, if you had a skill cape you were almost a god and you were a god if you had more than one. But I digress, RS2 completely changed the graphics and while they thought it looked good, it was actually terrible. As far as EoC goes, I had quit long before that and only came back after it came out so it was either learn how to use it or quit again. Evidently I decided to learn and become a fan of it.

The new layout, the eoc and the graphics. What made the game so awesome is you could play it on dial up internet! Now I have no idea what I am even doing, and honestly don't care enough to learn it :/ I miss the days of pest control and soul wars!

EoC without a doubt. It absolutely killed it for me, there is no possibility that I will ever play the game like that. I enjoyed fights on n autopilot mode in a way, easy to use- and it was simple.

Running up close behind was removal of the wild and free trade.

I personally love 07. If I was to play, it would be 07.

I mostly skill now because it would just be depressing for me otherwise. Last month I also bought membership and might stick with bonds because f2p is just awful now. I can't handle spamming abilities. The bluish layout crap bothers me. Though, I do enjoy the scenery and the fact I can move everything to my liking.

Combination of eoc, sof, solomons and bot nuke kind of ruined my fun. The armour changes are also bad and unappealing. Damn kiteshield doesn't even look like a kite anymore.

Controversial? Probably when they introduced micro transactions at a large scale, aka squeal of fortune.

That's a good point, controversial versus what update had the most complaints are two different things.

-Microtransactions are pretty high on that list, if not the first one.

-Removing free trade was another as it affected all players. (Where as the wild didn't.)

-Remvoing free2play from the high scores was a pretty big one as well. I know a lot of people in my old clan that were pissed.

One of my top "Least Favorite Updates".

Not really an update, but the release of 07' really made me grow to despise Jagex as a company. I understand why they did it, but it did not help their cause. The "newness" has worn off and now the few players that they lured back with it have left the game again. That and the community was drastically split over this and it really makes the game as a whole less enjoyable when you get caught up in an "EoC>07 or 07>EoC Argument".

Exactly this. I despised the graphical updates. When rune turned into that weird, bright cyan color... ugh. I still played here and there and got used to it and then EoC happened... adieu.
