    Science tries to explain everything.

Also, if science is unable to explain the origin of life (or the universe, for that matter) the default conclusion is not religious.

Dont belive in god. I was convinced by reliable sources like zeitgeist , sythe , shredderbeam.. I understood what i was beliving in was ignorance and made no sence if 1) i wasnt born religeous 2) heaven and hell dont exist.
I can see how some people see shredderbeam as some 1 like satan, but he just contradicts what other people belive in with hard facts and rational debate.
(big fan of Shredderbeam even though i never argued or debated with him, just read his posts)

So your answer, shredderbeam, to this topic's question is 'I don't know' right? Until science has the answer, I don't know either.
But I don't believe that God is our ignorance, God, and religion in general, is our comfort. Because so many unknowns exist, it is very easy to believe in a greater being that watches over and protects us and will reward us by allowing us to live in heaven, a utopia, when we die.

    Haha, cheers.

Ignorance isn't necessarily a negative thing. Ignorance is the state of not knowing. What that quote means is that what we do not know, we attribute to God. What we do know, we attribute to science. We know how a computer works - science. We don't know how the universe came to be - God.

It is certainly easier to believe in God. However, "X is comforting" does not imply that "X is true".

I absolutely agree with you on that remark

But the connotation of the word ignorance is too negative. The definition of ignorance is lack of knowledge, education, or awareness(according to Webster haha). And saying this means you are insulting many extremely intelligent individuals who do in fact believe in God and religion

Well, true, many will postulate God where there is a lack of ignorance. However, I only mean it as a generality, for the general population. If any theist ever takes offense to this, I'll gladly explain it to them.

Shredderbeam, may I ask how old you are? I'm 18.
The only reason I ask is because I think this is the only normal discussion - that did not involve yelling and swearing - I have had with a Sythe member before.

Yeah, rational, constructive exchanges are rare on this site. Ah well, consider the age of most members. ;)

I don't believe in god as a person, more as a spirit. I don't beleive in a heven or a hell. Is there any evidence of god existing other than a bible that was written after Jesus died?

    Moving right along...

Why must there be life after death?

That raises the question - who created God?

    The Existence of God

I choose to believe in God for motivation of people's and my own personal well being. I look at the world today and reflect at how many people are influenced by the thought of a higher being watching over them as a savor and as a inforcer or punishment. Not saying that this will change their own ideas of life and moral points. Although I believe that even if a person has a lack of belief or no belief in an idea and wants to deny the idea of a "GOD" in a legitimate way, then they must first study and learn more about the idea and hold on to their orginal perception that there is no higher being. I like the thought that no matter what, people are always looking for more information on the same subject whether is is discrediting the idea of God or protecting their own beliefs in God.

In a way I believe we are looking for information about God, so he must exist in some way.

    Enough caps lock.

Why do you think that there are many gods?

Here's a question though - Do you choose to believe/disbelieve in a teapot at the center of the Earth?

If you disbelieve in a teapot at the center of the Earth, why? Why shouldn't you choose to believe in it?

I disbelieve there is a teapot in the center of the Earth, because there is no credible evidence to support this idea. Also it does no good for me to believe this. It also makes no logical sense.

Knowing Shredder he was going to compare my disbelief for the teapot to the my belief for God.

Since I said I did not believe in his TeaPot theory since it had no credible facts he would then most likely move forward and compare how easily I discredited his teapot theory even though religion offers no credible proof. Since faith is an important cornerstone in most religions, he wanted to prove that I was not thinking logically when the idea of a higher being came into play and my train of thought was flawed.

At least that is where I think he was going to go.

I will respond later if Shredder agrees this is where he was going.

That sounds like a fairly logical assumption of where shredder was going to take the argument. However, I do support shredders view more.

I am a Secular Humanist by the way.
