The Death Penalty: Legal or not?

There are many people who suffer from mental problems, which in turn causes irrational behaviour, and in extreme cases, murder.
For example, 'pleading insanity', in a court of law, so you believe this shouldn't exist? and anybody commiting murder should be killed?

This would also mean, people who kill their loved ones because they are depressed, and cannot end their life themselves...

Lastly, put yourself in the shoes of a offenders family, he/she is to be sentenced for murder. She/He Fails to plead insanity.

Rather than having one families grief, you now have two families grieving.

The death penalty, from what I gather, is a law of retribution.

The fact that a trial that sentences you to a death penalty is more expensive the then SAME trial used to prosecute someone for life in prison is absurd. I never said that you are taking away someones rights to a fair trial, I just said that it's a corrupt system that is currently in place for death penalty trials.

Actually, the trial up to incarceration MAY be the same, but the appeals process is far longer and greater in a Death Penalty trial. I think the reasoning is fairly obvious, they don't want to wrongfully convict people. Conversely, they still do.

In what way do you think it's corrupt?

Definitely. One death to help many others. Not to mention, death is not something that's given, it's something you start with, and you later are given life. If someone doesn't deserve that which they are given, then why should it not be taken from them? Would you give an award to someone undeserving?

I will sacrifice you to purge societies sins. No. I shall enslave you to to be in servitude of a family. No.
What? You don't start with death and if anything you start with life.
No one is given anything, and, if your truly hanging your case on 'giving', then, once you 'give' someone something, ownership has been transferred and you have no right to take it back. If I give you a present, then find you later undeserving of it, I have no right to break into your house and reclaim what use to be mine.

One moral question to ask all people about the Death Penalty is do you think killing another human being is wrong?

Juries generally do not want to give someone the death penalty and thus the prosecution spends more to try to convince them. Due to that, the defense spends more money as well. Then you have a bunch of appeals which cost even more so no matter what you do, the death penalty is going to cost more because people don't want to kill an innocent person.

I do support it. As long as the individual is given a certain amount of years for new evidence to come forward.

If it were up to me, I'd have whatever the criminal did to the victim, done to them.

For example, criminal tortures someone, then the criminal is tortured in the same manor.

I would have to say yes, but only in specific case such as serial killing/raping/torture. People who commit such sinister crimes have a sickness that is un-cureable and should be put to death based on the fact that they do not value the lives of others. Most people with this sickness don't only kill one person, but multiple people before getting caught. So the death penalty is only fair and logical in this case.

The Death Penalty: Legal or not?

The proof of burden should always rest on the accuser and not the accused... Sadly many juries in the United States see this backwards... which results in many being wrongly convicted. That being said, I do support the death penalty. I don't think the "Eye for an Eye" ideology is correct because then the world would be blind.

I support the death penalty for those who:
    - murder children
    - murder innocent victims / bystanders / the defenseless / elderly
    - rape children / women
    - cannibalize
    - commit necrophilia
    - are serial killers
    - are sadistic killers

I do not support the death penalty for:
    - a father who killed the murderer of his children

It's legal for most states in the US and outlawed in half of the world.. keep in mind many 3rd world countries still have it... it's an ethical practice in my eyes.

Your statement that many juries in the US regard the defendant guilty until proven innocent is without any merit whatsoever. Who told you that?

Also, when the 'eye for an eye makes the whole world blind' quote gets pushed literalistically, you'll find that it is a coin toss. You see, some people are born with an odd number of eyes.

Why? Is there any logical grounding here, or is it purely based on arbitrary emotion?

Yep. But what if they were a rapist or something? Would you want to rape a nasty, sadistic murderer?
    No. That doesn't work.

I do support the death penalty.

Expanding on that, I'm sure that there are several rapists that would even enjoy being raped, as disgusting as it sounds.

I do not support the Death Penalty, no matter what the crime may be, death doesn't justify punishment. Instead of "killing off" the accused, put them to use. If they're mentally unstable, form them into some sort of willing, useful member of society or in this case, Prison.

I personally think an alternative to the Death Penalty would be being locked in a 3 by 3 cell in solitary confinement. Absolutely no source of light, food & water obviously situated, otherwise; no contact with society.
