I was thinking about this sort of subject in bed yesterday. If an afterlife exists why don't people who die for 30 seconds and are revived by electricity remember anything about it?

We already have a thread on this - it's called Dimethyltriptamine, or DMT - which causes people to have these "Out-of-body/Near-death experiences".

    Near-death experience

I watched a cool, but cheesy movie yesterday about medical students who were purposefully inducing death on one another and then bringing each other back, in order to experience the NDE's that many people report experiencing when they die in hospitals before being revived. It was interesting, but not very realistic.

As for myself, I have never had a NDE, but I've had a few out of body experiences which are sort of similar. The first one happened when I was about 16/17 years old and got my extremely interested in astral projecting and lucid dreaming. I spent months listening to special tapes in bed that are designed to help you concentrate on putting your body to sleep, yet keeping your mind awake, essentially splitting your consciousness and allowing you to "roll out" of your body. I was never able to do it intentionally though, the few bizarre experiences I have had have all been completely random and uncontrollable.

When my car almost hit a pole, my life didn't flash before my eyes, I was just frozen until it was over. I wasn't thinking, I wasn't moving, and I even think I wasn't breathing for that short period of time.

Driving home from nationals in wrestling on the highway (it was spring break for college and highschool) and a guy in a red mustang broke across the middle barrier (it was just a "U" that goes in the ground that consisted of grass liek in the country) and we couldnt go to the right lane because of a 18 wheeler, so we had to sit there and pray. luckily it missed us and passed us with less then like 3 feet and they just spin off into the distince, theey seemed fine after that. thank god no one got hurt

I was watching this video of a boy who had three near-death experiences; he stated that he saw "the light," he also stated things like he was in a completely white room, and it was the most peaceful thing he ever felt.

This is correct. All those stories about people dying and seeing heaven, then coming back to life is just DMT being released through your body. DMT is also extracted from plants into a drug, which causes the same out of body experience. It's considered the strongest psychedelic known to man. You would think people would know this by now instead of thinking this proves that heaven exists. I'm not saying that heaven doesn't exist because no one can know, but the first few minutes people experience after death is nothing but DMT.

    Never had one myself.
I didn't know that NDE's were this deep.

When I think of a near death experience I think of someone falling off a cliff but then getting caught at the last second.
Didn't know how interesting it could be.

I almost drowned when I was younger, but I only remember being really scared. I imagine you would have to be unconscious to experience this kind of thing however. It really bothers me how people use these to write books though. For example I read one about a man who was in a car accident, and was "dead" for 15 minutes. During this time he said he was in heaven, and he saw all of his family members and such. Obviously he was just hallucinating, and even if heaven was real (which it may be, but none of us really know) it clearly states in the bible that heaven is indescribable. It says that heaven is to beautiful to be described by using words, so how can someone so easily write a book on it?

DMT is something extracted from plants and is made during you're sleep, people say a DMT trip is like a near death experience. People take it as a psychedelic drug. ,

IMO think its a whole bunch of bull-shit. I'm not disagreeing with the things you might feel but the stupidity of them relating it to something paranormal... oh fuck that pisses me of, do you really think if it wasn't for the first person to share that kind experience everyone else would be saying the same shit?

"Popular interest in near-death experiences was initially sparked by Weiss's 1972 The Vestibule, followed by Raymond Moody's 1975 book Life After Life"
