$150 to reinstall Windows 10?

So one of my laptops ended up with a corrupt AVG startup file and would not boot. I ended up with a screen that said something along the lines of 'Windows Repair needed, system could not boot properly due to corrupt or missing avgboota.sys file'.

So I try the AVG rescue CD to disable all AVG driver files upon start up. This was to no avail, so I then tried the Windows recovery tool on my USB drive, lo and behold, the USB stick was not detected even after 5 tries.

Just now, I took my computer to the 'Geek Squad' and the guy behind the counter was perplexed, explaining that I could do a 1-time fix for $150 for a 3 year protection for $300, oh, and they'll need my laptop for a week or so?! Yeah sure scrubby, so I make my way to another shop where the guy needs my help just to get to the BIOS boot override screen, and he wants $155 for the reinstall. But don't worry, they'll run "diagnostics" to make sure it's "nothing hardware related". It's like, come on... don't give me this diagnostics bullshit

So in that shop, I meant show him that the USB stick wasn't detected, yet miraculously it was detected upon this try. So I just reinstalled Windows in the comfort of my own home and now my computer is running so fresh and clean. Anyways, what heap of bullshit have you guys been tried to be fed lately?!

TLDR: Two stores wanted $150+ to reinstall Windows and run hardware diagnostics, I Google searched some DIY videos. Solved problems in 10 minutes.
