    Ok so I am just training mage with a staff and all the sudden 2 DEF! why? and even with just the runes it goes up def. WHY?

    You probably have the defensive casting active. Only reason you can train defence with magic.

    It's not an attack style (I think it used to be though). Just go to the spellbook tab and there should be a little shield button somewhere that you can toggle.

    If you were using staff of light, i think its controlled xp if you melee? I'm not sure, just check.

    Check the shield thing on the bottom of the spellbook.

    Go to the spellbook. If you see a selected one with shield to the close right then that one gives defense experience. Unselect and choose the magic one only so you get only magic xp.
