[TUT] Pidgin - What it is and how to use it

Ok you installed MSN Messenger. Everything works fine. Then you get a PM from someone saying that they only have AIM and you need to get AIM. You install it, then you get another PM saying you need to get ICQ. All of those programs can really slow down your computer and spam you task bar. I will teach you how to put all of those IM programs into one, really good program.

First you will need to get Pidgin. Just head over right here to download the program. The install is so self-explanatory that i am not even going to explain that.

now, There are many different IM networks that i can explain but today i will do ICQ. It should be basically the same as any other network to. So lets head over to their sign-up site. When you visit you should see something like this.



Now just fill out all of the information to your liking. Then after you click submit you should see this.



This will tell you your "ICQ Number". Write this down or open up a notepad and copy paste it too a new file. You will only need it once (unless you uninstall pidgin or something). Now that we have an account lets open up Pidgin again. You should see this.



Now we have to add our new ICQ account to Pidgin. So, lets go to the "Accounts" tab and select "Manage Accounts".



Then when you did that a new window should pop up. Press "Add" to add an account.



Now an account window should pop-up. Under protocol select ICQ.



Now you have to fill out all of your info. Under Username put in the "ICQ Number" that we wrote down earlier. Under password put the password that you made your account with earlier. Then just press "Save".



Now it should automatically log-in to your account and you should have an empty, white window. Don't worry, when you get more buddy's this list will become populated.

Now all that you have to do is get used to this program. To add a freind just go "Buddies" tab and press "Add Buddy...". Everything else should be self-explanatory
