    Dyslexia/Dyspraxia

Well, ive got both Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, and i was wondering do other members have this and how have they managed to over come it.

With me, i still have trouble with spelling, punctuation, grammar as well as my coordination, but i have tried my hardest to achieve my goals. I knew i was dyspraxic from an early age but was never officially diagnosed until September just gone. While i was getting diagnosed at my university where i stupidly had to pay $400 out of my own money for them to tell me it, i found out i was dyslexic which in a way made me quite proud as i had managed to get through school, college and my first year of university with ok grades.

So i was wondering who else here has got one of these (disorders) if you want to call them that, and how have you dealt with it, and also to people who don't have this, what are your views.

A few of my friends in elementary school had it, I didn't know or understand it until after I moved schools.

It must be a burden when trying to write things.

dyslexia has been very embarrassing for me while doing a presentation or reading something off to friends.
i would start off ok, but sometimes the words just get all jumbled and i start to stumble along the most simple sentence.

i usually catch myself doing this early though and give myself a second or two break and go right back at it. this tends to help a lot.
the worst thing you could do is incessantly keep going at it until frustrated and exhausted

The dyslexia for me is a slight problem, as i am also studying drama (i.e. loads of reading), but I've found taking the time, reading and re-reading the scripts has helped loads.

On the dyspraxia side of things I'm also quite shy and have not had many relationships due to it. I was bullied like hell in school and ended up trying to commit suicide twice because of it but what made me realize the value of life was my family and true friends, which if you want you could talk to your gf a little bit about. Research is the key to all these things, as most people who don't understand it will just try and abuse/bully the person. Not because of the person themselves but because in a way the bully's are scared of them as they don't understand them.

Don't be embarrassed bro. There's a certain pattern of people who have dyslexia write. Sometimes, they write it in a way and if you look it in a mirror it's correct, that's a problem my friend had.

Don't think your someone who has less potential then others.

There are a lot of people who've had dyslexia and have overcome it in different ways. If you keep trying and nothing works out, look for a talent or something else to do.

I can name a few people that were famous that are dyslexic or have had it.

    Albert Einstein
    Thomas Edison
    Walt Disney
    Magic Johnson
    Leonardo Da Vinci

Who knows, maybe someone will add your name to the list.

Good luck, bro! If you ever need anything hit me up. :)

tell him to never give up. Ask for help, he might feel bad for asking for help but he needs it. Dyslexia shouldn't be something that holds you back.

I heard that dyspraxia was quite rare. To have them both must be a burden.
Did you know there was something different about yourself for a long time, or did it just suddenly get worse?

ive known since i was a kid i had dyspraxia as it got spotted while i was in primary school, and i went every other week to a specialist for physio and other stuff up until i was 11, but it was never officially diagnosed. I then thought nothing of it till i finished my 1st year of uni (aged 21 so over 10 years between), and realized i was struggling so while i went to get tested for dyspraxia, the educational psychologist who was doing the test noticed i was dyslexic as well. So it basically cost me £275 (~$400) to get found out i am dyslexic, but now once i get all the letters through i can get loads of help through uni, and also a laptop given to me (permanently) to help with my work.

My cousin has dyslexia and he just turned 8 years old. I help him with his homework a few days a week and he's been struggling lately. I don't know if it's the anticipation for the summer, or the dyslexia just getting to be a little too confusing and a little too much for him.

It's very comforting to know that you made it so far and dealt with it so long. It gives me something to tell him and back him up when I tell him not to let anything get in his way.
