Show Some Love for Old School Rap

I love old school rap, but also appreciate the creativeness of the new generation today.

This thread is just to recognize and appreciate how great old school rap actually is.

Producers like DJ Premier J Dilla, Kanye West, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, Dr.Dre, Eric B etc. were part of a very important aspect of Hip-Hop/Rap influence in today's music. They created that boom-bap style of production that ironically has become seemingly unpopular in the Hip-Hop culture of today. However, Producers today make beats that are way more elaborate and thought out, whilst also collectively working on the projects with other popular producers. That's not how it used to be for sure.

MC's like GURU from Gang Starr, Rakim, Tupac, E-40, Nas, Wu-Tang clan, etc (the list goes on!) spit the absolute truth. They were never afraid to speak what's on their mind at all times. I'm not saying new school rappers are afraid, because they are clearly not and have that same kind of talent that was present in the old school MC's.

What i'm saying is that in my opinion, people should respect old school rap/hip-hop more because it created a pathway for the people like Kendrick Lamar, The Underachievers, Flatbush Zombies, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Danny Brown, and others to follow and become their own unique vision of themselves in the hip-hop culture because the OGs provided some insight for them to learn and use.

    What are your thoughts? Thanks!

I'm liking the list of your old school rapper list bro, I'de throw in Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Big Pun Big L, Chino XL & Canibus.

I have a very different taste in new school rap though I think all the artists you listed are wack in my opinion. Some of my favourite rappers right now are Ra The Rugged Man, Chris Rivers, K Rino, Canibus, Chino Xl, Vinnie Paz, Apathy.

Talking Houston shit and didn't rep Geto Boys?? Ur died 2 me. Also no offense but anyone from screwed up click doesn't belong here, that shit was great MUSIC and DJ Screw was a beastly DJ but lyrically most that shit is strait up weak. When I think old school hip hop I think about MC's, not guys getting really tore up and slowing down (mostly) mediocre rap songs.

Youve got good taste OP. Old school hip hop is where its at. Eric B, Rakim, Guru/Gangstarr are some of my favorite old school guys.

wu tang was honestly the greatest thing to ever happen to hip hop. rza had some of the finest production to come out of the 90's.... well, him and premo\

EDIT: how many times has the term 'cream' come up in hip hop since they dropped it? a fucking lot is the answer...

Wu tang is epic, 36 chambers strait up changed my life. But GOAT? Nahhhh. I'd certainly put rza up there with premo production wise but wu tang as a whole didn't always come with the best lyrics lol.

whaaaaaaaa? inspectah is probably the most underrated lyricist of the 90's. GZA is one of the greatest to ever touch a mic (LIQUID SWORDS). ghostface too skilled as well. meth/odb/rza/raekwon/ugod/masta all top notch emcees as well. are any of them the goat of hip hop? nah, but as a collective they ARE the goat

Inspectah, raekwon and ghostface are my favorite lyricists of wutang. Not knocking the other guys, but idk man. 36 chambers really got me into hip hop but I can't really say ANY of their other recordings really sunk in. Wutang forever is pretty good though. After 36 chambers most of them came into their own as solo artists, I can't say they are the goat based on one album. But if you put 36 chambers in a greatest hip hop albums of all time situation, it would certainly be tough to beat.
