    "Startup Repair" NEED HELP! :(

I restarted my Computer, now when I try to restart it, before starting up a box comes up saying "Startup Repair" and does something that looks like a scan.. after a minute or so, another thing comes up saying "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically." underneath, "Sending more information can help Microsoft create solutions," and it gives me the option to Send the info, or Don't send. It restarts my computer, and the same message comes up over and over again.. but at the end it says "If you continue to see this message, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance," who should I contact? :/ thank you.

(I've tried f8, then going to "Start Windows Normally," but this doesn't work..)

    Wub.

If it's a toshiba perhaps not, (I don't see a whole lot of toshiba's comming with the setup disk >={. But if you can locate your disk, enter the install menu, You will be prompted with a repair option. Use the repair function.

My girlfriend had to contact Toshiba via e-mail and they sent her the recovery disks in the mail. Also a lot of junk software that comes pre-installed.

That might be caused by a broken hard drive. Try running the "last known working configuration" from the startup menu where it says "normal startup" aswell.

You could also burn a linux live cd and start your computer with it. Linux live cd always scans for hardware failures and it will not start if there is faulty hard drive. Atleast that could prove if its broken hard drive, or just a random software mess.

Pretty sure it's not the hard drive; and he already said he couldn't get on that way. Worst case scenerio a bad MBR, but it's not showing symtoms of that. Could be as simple as his virus corrupting a core lib.

Sorry to hear it, I've never had good experiences with toshiba, I bought a brand new laptop and half the hardware in it was already 'legacy'. Bios needed to be phlashed. Cmos batter was shit. The chassy was locked internally but since it was still under warranty I just took it in and had them deal with it. Infact, my toshiba sattelite is the only computer I've ever seen/owned that couldn't run FreeBSD, their chipsets where a mess. The whole hardware selection was askew.... FreeBSD will run on ANYTHING :O

Every time I stop by the computer store (who only deals in toshiba) to pick up parts for anything they try and con me into dumping 2500$ for one of their 'new' computers. (approximatly 5-6 years out of date, comes with a woppin 768mb ram, 20gig drive. (they only carry 2 models). And for the big 'bad ass' official Toshibacrap dealership they make themselves out to be they won't order you anything from the interwebz, it's just their 2 BFE models.

    (Can't stand toshiba)

OP: If you don't have your OS Installation disk you would have to create a new one, or attempt to fix your issues via UBCD :x

it's simple enough just to create your own disk and use that. Even if it has to be a simple XP disk you can install while you prepare your pc for a new install.

+ it doesn't cost anything to fix it yourself

To elaborate more on this. I suggest using a genuine operating system disk or as quoted said you can burn an operating system disk or system recovery disk. (plenty on the web) You can change your boot sequence to "boot to cd-rom" and not hard drive from the boot sequence (normally f10 or del). Then you boot to the CD and go through the steps to recover. Usual fix is install on top/recovery but worst case scenario reformat.

Typically you'd go to btjunkie.org and grab a windows dvd *.iso image, FreeBSD.org/pcbsd.org (for a freebsd *.iso image) or distrowatch.org (for a linux *.iso image). But definitely if you're looking for a quick solution fast I'd go with XP black. It's small, and will give you some breathing room to get whatever else you need for getting your computer back to the way it was. It doesn't have to be a legitimate windows disk, it just needs a broken wga. (I know this isn't super appropriate, but it is relevant in this case).

And you can only change boot order prior to the init process for bootstrapping. i.e. has to be done before the os begins to load.
