Starting website (Advice please)

Hey guys.

I have for about a month been thinking about starting a website. Today I talked to a guy, who agreed that I might be on to something, and who will support my idea financially, which means I can now start to develop a specific plan for the project.
What it will be like does not matter. What I really would like your help with:

I know a lot of you guys here have websites, and I know a lot of you probably have a lot of knowledge about internet sites, etc. What would your advice be to a guy starting a website? How would you advertise? What is your preferable way to get a domain? Basically anything you can come up with that you think a guy without any knowledge about starting a website could find useful. I know it is a lot to ask, but I will really appreciate your help.

I know a lot of you think that being as dumb as I am with computers is crazy when you want to start a website. However, a pro will be paid to make the actual website. For all I know, a lot of smart people visit these boards, and I am sure some of you have some gold that could be useful. Again, I will be very happy if you wanted to help me.

well for the domain i can recommend buying a domain from yahoo cuz they have an offer now to get any domain for only $1.99 for one year. normally yahoo domains are $9.99 for a year but they lowered their price by $8. and this offer expires in a month or so i think. anyway get a domain from there. if you would like to support the site financially urself contact advertisers and place 5-8 ads on each of your pages onto the side or bottom of the page. this will bring you a quite a bit of cash over time.
