During some of my classes that i don't need to pay attention to i like to waste my time by reading books to keep me from falling asleep. Basically what i'm looking for is:

    1. The title of your favorite book
    2. Your favorite author
    3. A book you would highly recommend someone to read

Book - For a new liberty
    Author - Murray Rothbard
Suggestion - Man, Economy, and State

Not huge fan of Rothbardianism, though For A New Liberty is a good book. I've been listening to it myself.

Book - Depends on genre but I've been on a postmodern kick lately so in the I'll list my favorite postmodern book which is Cats Cradle by Vonnegut.

Author - Still depends on genre my favorite nonfiction writer is Hunter S. Thompson my favorite fiction writer is probably H.P. Lovecraft or Jorge Louis Borges.

Suggest - The Prestige by Christopher Priest, and of the short stories by Lovecraft or Borges. As far as nonfiction goes probably Kingdom Of Fear by Hunter S. Thompson. It's my favorite collection of his.

    Book - The Night Angel
    Author - David Eddings
Suggestion - The Black Prism. The fictional world Brent Weeks creates is very vivid and shows a great deal of imagination and genius on his part and is very outside the box.

Pretty much anything by him is fantastic.

I know people hated To Kill a Mockingbird, but I liked it.

American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis is my favorite. If you like the documentaries by Louis Theroux i would recommend "Call of the weird" i recently read it and it was a nice read. The god delusion by Richard Dawkins was very intresting aswell

That's actually extremely weird that you mentioned American Psycho. Earlier in the day i was looking at it and thinking to myself that was going to be the next book i read.

Book: The entire harry potter series, specifically Prisoner of Azkaban
Author: Garth Nix, he has a wide variety of books, all great reads. I LOVE the Abhorsen series by Nix.
Suggestion: Inheritance cycle, Abhorsen series, Castle in the Attic for younger users (12-14ish)
Alternatively, Under the Dome and other "softer" novels by Stephen King are amazing, mind bending reads. He's got several titles that aren't so intense/stressful to read, Under the Dome is one of the best I've come across.

Book - The Discworld series. There's enough shit in that series to keep you reading for at least 2 or 3 months, but you have to get the order right. There's currently about 40 novels, but it might not be good for class because you'll laugh randomly :)
Author - Diana Wynne Jones / Chrestomanci Series was a fun read too
Rec - I liked Kingkiller and am in the middle of Abhorsen at.
I'll update if I remember any others

If the one you're referring to, wrote by Stephenie Meyer, it is a very good book.

HST is a god to me, im a huge fan of his writing style non fiction and fiction alike. You should also check out his friend Ken Keseys books most notably "one flew over the cuckoos nest". William burroughs is also a great author in a similar vein of writing style, Junky and Naked lunch are some notable books he wrote. Granted Burroughs and Kesey primarily write fiction based on real life experiences its still primarily fiction. As for non fiction i primarily read true crime, im fascinated by the minds of serial killers and pretty much read anything i can read about them for any insight as to why they do what they do and how they are pursued ect. I also read alot of philosophy, mostly Immanuel Kant, Kierkegaard and Nietzche so basically (but not excluded to) existentialism. I also sometimes read some steven king and WWII history stuff when im taking a break from my normal routine. If you are a fan of HST you may like some of the other authors i mentioned, especially of the merry prankster group, (kesey and his friends).

Naked Lunch is excellent. It is the only book to ever gross me out. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was really good as well. Tom Wolfe is another great new journalist.

There is a distinction between Burroughs and Thompson stylistically though. The 'action' if you will in both are very similar but they have a different feel. Thompson's writing feels more real because a majority of it was real, and Burroughs wrote fiction based on reality as mentioned by nodnar - but he would write it in sequence on paper and then cut it up and move all of the pieces around to give it a very surrealistic feel so sometimes it is hard to follow what he is talking about. Burroughs' work is very nonlinear and gives real sense of chaos.

Thompson is still my number one favorite writer though. He is amazing. If you like Kingdom of Fear make sure you read all of the Gonzo Papers. The Great Shark Hunt is great. His later stuff isn't as good as his late 50s - early 80s stuff.
