Hey guys, I just bought myself my first guitar, a fender stratocaster and a cheap amp. I plan on teaching myself but do you guys have any tips on where to start? I assume I would learn chords and later how to read tabs...thanks for your time

TABS help a lot when you're starting out. If you can teach yourself the basic chords, a memorize them, you should be good. I took lessons for about 6 months, then from there I looked up tabs for playing my favorite songs. After a while you'll start getting the hang of playing stuff by ear

EDIT: there are lots of books/videos that help you get learn the basics, I highly recommend using those if you want to learn the basic techniques.

For me I just picked a song that I always liked and committed to learning it; not the best way if you are new to the instrument but you will eventually get better at it.

    I get my tabs from http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ :)

    Good luck!

That's actually a very good way to learn to play the guitar in my opinion.

Playing songs you like over and over again till you get them right really helps you learn the different finger positions/chords.

Highly recommend that website too :D

if you want lessons look up "Guitar Lesson Marty" this man is amazing and will help you if you are a beginner. After you find his name search a song and see if he has the lesson for it
