It took me so long to get the background colour right :/ (Because i use a program called f.lux which changes the screen so it's better for your eyes depending on what time it is.)

Constructive criticism would be appreciated.

 

I don't like how the glow stops flat and how the outline is very blocky.

 

The glow? what glow? there is no glow..

EDIT: OH THAT GLOW, yeah it took me ages to get the bg right, so i gave up, will probably do it again today.

And it's meant to be 'blocky' i made it that way, but thanks.

 

Hmmm.
There are a few major problems, and please don't be upset by my pointing them out.
-First off, don't use a background. Use transparency. Check GFX Tutorials section for my guide on how to do this ^^
-Secondly, however you're working is very low resolution. It looks like you created the image and then doubled its size. Two tips for general image improvement:
-Work in higher resolution
-Work with the image larger than it's going to be and crop it down to whatever size you'd like. Have you seen FireZ's avatar? I made that around 500x500 when I designed it.
-Thirdly, the glow effect isn't a glow at all, which is the problem. It's a stroke around the border (which I'm sure you're well aware of,) but strokes are usually pretty low quality. I'd suggest removing it, as well as the next tip:
-Fourth, the glow doesn't work with the text. Your text is going for the embossed 3d effect, while the stroke lies flat behind it. I'd suggest adding a drop shadow instead, or bringing the glow (after you feather it) in a little, as if it's surrounding the text like mist.

Ah haven't seen this type of stuff in a while, thanks for this.

So,
Firstly: I used a background because you can't use overlays on transparency. I know how to use transparency, just sometimes backgrounds are better.

Secondly: Uhh, it isn't low resolution... well it seems fine to me and yeah i usually work in around 500x500.

Thirdly: The 'glow' effect isn't supposed to be a glow. it's supposed to be like that and it's not a stroke, it's a text layer with a colour overlay - moved to down and right a bit.

Fourthly: Yeah, i really don't think a drop shadow would work tbh. It's going for that Web 2.0 and sweet look if you get what i mean.
