Star ocean - The last hope international

Well this is my first time actually playing it but my brother has played this many times and has a "file" already. What i'm wondering is if i start a new game will my file overwrite his file, or will it simply let me choose to save on a new save file? If any of that made sense at all. This is on PS3.
