30 Seconds Between Searches

Is there any way that the 30 seconds between searches could be removed for certain people?

eg. higher donors, staff members(if it hasn't been already), people with x post count, etc.

I know that it isn't that big of an issue, but enough that its annoyed me a couple of times and led me to making this suggestion.

If someone doesn't understand what I'm talking about let me know and I can be more specific.

 

I support this. I know the waiting time prevents people from using bots to overload the server and run email scanners and such, but if the limitation is removed only to "trustable" users, there would be no problem. By "trustable" we can mean an user who registered more than three monts ago or have more than 200 posts, or something else.

I already got annoyed by this before, and know how it's boring. You got my support.


However, we must first see if vbulletin allows this kind of customisation without requiring shitloads of coding, meh.

 

No support. There are a lot of donors and the server would be under a heavier load, leading it to not be able to function as fast as if it had the 30 second period between searches. I'm sure this suggestion has been brought forwards and denied many times.

 

Well, the exception don't necessarily need to be applied to donors (there are lots of unreliable donors after all). And I don't believe there would be too much server demand if the search limitation was removed for "selected" users. The main purpose of the waiting time is to avoid bots from using the search engine, not common users. So removing the restriction from active users wouldn't be so senseless.

This is just my oppinion, though. =P

 

I support as long as it doesn't have negative effects on the sites running capabilities.

 

I support removing, if not reducing, the time limit. And if/when people somehow start how abusing it again, bring it back.

 

I would support this if it was for people that have higher donor status'... Like a perk I guess. Or for people with 1000+ post count and 1yr+ time on the forums. However, I personally believe that post count shouldn't be the only thing that makes someone deemed "trustworthy".

As brought up in Elena's MM suggestion thread, anyone can go anywhere and "bump" for post count. Or as proven by Savitar/Myself/etc., anyone can get to 100+ posts in a matter of days just by providing 30+ Ban Evaders, hovering in Our Community or other sections. I would not deem anyone trustworthy just by post count.

Personally, I think the people that are less likely to abuse the system are those with high-donor status. Why do I say that? Because 1. It's easier to notice when they're doing it and could have a rule implemented so that spamming it is strikes an infraction. 2. They're high-donors and wouldn't want to take a chance getting a ban (for spam searching). 3. There are much fewer high-donors (~100?), which would reduce the stress on the server. 4. We're still searching for perks to high-donors.

However, if I remember correctly, this has been shot down before because it was a problem with modifying for the devs. I could be mistaken though...

 

This has been suggested many times before. The search timer is only changeable by usergroup. So if Matthew changed the search timer for one set of people then it would have to be for everyone. The only other alternative is creating more usergroups, which Matthew said isn't going to happen anytime soon. The only thing you could suggest is to have the search timer lowered, but even then 30 seconds is reasonable. It was a lot higher years back.

 

This is a forumwide setting. Not going to happen.
