Skype impersonators

Hi All

I suggest that adjustments be made to the stickys within market forums, or a new sticky to be made detailing how to send, and check received Skype confirmation PMs.

Threads like the below detail Skype impersonators and how to check you are speaking to the correct Skype account, however people seem to rely on the PMs heavily and most don't even check the PM, or know what they need to be checking. I assume most simply check that the text matches which is easy for an impersonator to forge.

The update should basically cover the basics of how to send a good sythe confirmation PM, and for those receiving how to check the skypes properly to ensure they are not being scammed.

I like the idea. Imposters are always adapting and I've seen a few instances of them getting people to send 'legit' looking PMs, it's only when you really read through that you realise they're not 100% accurate. Would also love to see heavy repercussions for people who send poor Sythe PMs - there's no excuse for it and it takes no time at all. Definite support!

Support, we've had enough 'man in the middle' imposter scams to warrant a necessary change

 

100% in support of this as it most definitely will help the community/ and newer members.

 

Sadly wouldn't be very effective as too many of the newer users who need this don't use the stickies but certainly worth changing it for the one or two a year who do

 

Would it be possible to implement a feature where user has to have read the stickies before posting in the section?Like u get a pop-up when you try to post

 

Ask sythe to add it to the welcome message, probs the best you'll get

 

What if we just compiled a list detailing all of the major scam methods? Would be a good place for new users to start before entering the market.

I can't edit it myself but if someone makes some adjustments and asks a staff member I'm sure they would update it. If nobody else does I may just do it later..

This is a good idea. If you want to make the initiative to start the thread and create a layout on how to prevent this, feel free to do so. Staff will make chances as necessary. If you don't want to, then that's fine. Staff or myself will make a layout for this suggestion.

 

Support but I've stressed this for years.

I even made a video guide on powerbot.org and although it did save many people from being scammed the actual problem remained with seller negligence.

Some sellers just send lazy PM's of copy and pasted text which means they can be used in a 'man in the middle' scam at any time due to their negligence. Regardless of whether they are held accountable and have to refund, this still causes hassle, confusion and a negative experience for the buyer, which could result in them never trading on sythe again.

The situation as a whole needs to be addressed, not just this part. I know for example my friend 'Won' has been forced to refund due to his negligence in the past, but punishment in this area isn't being enforced enough in my opinion.

 

I can draft something up if i get a bit of time later this week, if none of the mods take a stab at it before me.

Can't agree more to this; newcomers to the site aren't aware of all the scams so take a simple PM as gospel and when they report the issue they don't have much of a leg to stand on unfortunately because they didn't take due care, due care which they weren't aware was needed to be taken.

 

I am also going to throw up some support no issue with always doing minor things to keep the community safe.

Although I feel like no new member reads stickies I think this is a great idea. Even after people get scammed directing them to this stickie will help them understand what happen and how to avoid it next time. Good shout dieze

Idiots exist, did exist and will exist

1. People barely read stickies
2. Even if they have click to add buttons on thread a lot of people still add wrong skypes
3. They cant recognise skype ID from skype name
4. Some sellers cant even recognise their skype IDs from their skype names / emails
5. Even with examples how to avoid impersonators, pictures how to recognise what is real skype ID they still add wrong
6. The dont ask for pm

long story short people who don't have enough intelligence to read and follow the tips wont get it from stickies.
