    Shoulder surgery

So on 14 March I am scheduled to go under the knife!

Backstory: last August I had a dislocated shoulder while sparing in BJJ. After X-rays and pain meds, in about mid November I finally got an MRI which showed 3 different tears in my labrum of my left shoulder. Along with that my biceps tendon also seemed to be torn.

My doctor decided that trying physical therapy would be the best option, however after months of negative progress surgery seems like the last option.

The surgery would entail a Shoulder Arthroscopy, a Labrum correction/repair, and a biceps tenodesis.

The first two I have no idea what exactly it entails but the tenodesis is when you cut the biceps tendon from the labrum and instead attach it to the humorous.

The reason I'm posting here is I was wondering if anyone here has gone through anything like this of if they have any personal experiences with it.

    Thank you in advance!

Although I don't suffer from that. I've had serious sciatica problems for about 3 years now which I'm 99% sure happened from a mistake I made while working out. It seems like nothing is working for me either so I know how you feel.

I wish you all the best with your op and hopefully you recover well.

    Shoulder surgery

In about March 2011 my shoulder was dislocated while boxing an improperly trained opponent who far out weighed me. 230 (opponent) vs. 175 (me at the time). After missing my face with a hook he blasted my shoulder and effectively dislocated my shoulder. Not sure how many tears but Labrum was blown to the point where they said surgery was necessary unless I wanted continued dislocation for even easier tasks (which happened once before I decided to get surgery). I also had a bone spur in my shoulder which they wanted to remove. I had a shoulder arthroscopy, labrum correction/repair, and removal of bone spur. Following the surgery I was on percocet for a week, had to wear a special sling for a month, and had a special ice machine that I would ice my shoulder with every few hours. After the month was up I started PT (which I did not take very seriously but eventually got to a somewhat working strength in the one affected arm). At the start of PT I could not lift a 2lb dumbbell, whereas my right arm I could lift upwards of 100+ lbs.

All in all if you want serious results you have to be seriously committed to healthy eating and PT exercises until you can start a workout regiment. Take it slow is the best advice I have! Personally I haven't returned to any martial arts since the surgery as I found my left shoulder getting too worn out too quickly. My fighting style calls for my left hand to be my jab/quick hook hand, mainly using jabs to stay on the outside of a smaller target since I am on the taller/longer reach side.

I am in the same boat as you now mate. About a year ago I lifted something wrong while working out and tweaked my back, eventually developing into sciatica. Also have whiplash from a car accident which radiates all the way to my elbows and about half way down my back. Also get occasional muscle spasms and bursts of nerve pain. I went to a chiropractor and was told I had a compressed disc in my lower back, a vertebrae at the top of my neck pushed out of line, and improper spine curvature due to years of bad posture.

Did the chiropractor thing for a while but wasn't really helping due to the fact that I do rough manual labor as a carpenter. The only relief that I have gotten is from an inversion table. Would definitely recommend it if you don't mind hanging upside down. Relieves SO much pressure almost instantly. Have to use daily to have a lasting effect though. It stretches out you're spine and allows the discs to re hydrate (as long as you are drinking an appropriate amount of water. Also take a look at DRX900/Spinal Traction machines that are said to the same as an inversion table but on steroids. The only problem is it costs upwards of $9,000.

    Shoulder surgery

I haven't had the issue with shoulder surgery, but this past year in April I had broken my ankle in multiple places and had surgery on it.

They may not be the same, but they're both used so much and you don't realize how much you use them until they're unusable for a certain period of time. Whilst I was unable to walk, I became extremely depressed extremely quickly.

    I can say the following:
    - It's probably going to be painful.
    - You're going to have at least one 'bad' day, give yourself the rest that you need.
    - Don't be afraid to talk to others about how you're feeling. You need to get your feelings out.
    - Keep up with your therapy when you are able to do it again. If you stop, so does your progress.

Just keep your head up. You're stepping into the right direction. You got this.

Best of luck and feel free to message if you're down.

    Victoria

Update on the surgery? Hope all goes well.

Edit: Seems like you had the surgery before the 14th, goodluck on the recovery/wish you the best.
