Riven isn't even good anymore tho

 

yeah they nerfd her to hell

They look a little time or dmg from her shield but shes still OP

 

The early game nerf hit her hard enough to place her out of god and t1 tiers in my mental list. She's good as a counter but doesn't scale well enough into late or into ranged meta to be a constant pickban any longer.

Riven is a "ranged caster" by definition, but if you can shut her down early there isn't much she can do. She needs melee to farm and if you're any champ that can stop that or you get a few ganks early, it's GG. Most people think that "riven OP 1v1 toplane zomg" but in reality, it's that her gc juke, q mobility and lock are one of the best things to gank for. She can catch up to a flashing enemy that's caught right.

Top lane isn't a 1v1. Mid lane is. Top is a 2v2, junglers and tops.

I don't know about you, but most pro players consider mid to be the jungle-camp lane. For example, most people attribute TSM's success largely to the playstyle synergy of Oddone (jungler) and Bjergsen (mid) lane.

In the current meta, the top lane is a farm lane. This is for three reasons: (1) the top lane champs are often very hard to kill and have significant gap closers to stay safe; (2) the top lane turret is shielded before 8 minutes so it's much slower to take down; and (3) if I'm mid/adc/jungle and I ever see my top lane being ganked after 10:00, I immediately pounce on dragon. We can force a 4v3 at dragon easily enough, and they have no smite to contest it. Ganking top doesn't really result in much other than +450 gold to your team if you are lucky. Ganking mid gets the gold in a much more valuable place; it allows you to take the most important turret in the game; and it still allows the jungler the chance to take buffs, counter-gank, and gank other lanes.

 

From what i've seen, top is being paid a lot more attention to as of late. Back when there were juts two tanks smacking the hell out of each other until 25 minutes of course, nothing. But now most mids have the range or gc to escape to their tower easily, and not many can dive 2v1 early. Any mid laner worth a damn knows where the enemy jungler should be and can ward accordingly. You're right with your points though, but as most top laners can now fill jungling, I've seen a lot of tops that are camped and get ahead, and change to jungling and overganking. For example, if I'm riven and I'm 3-0 then staying in lane and pushing his tower is a waste of power. I'd rather bring the jungler to hold my lane while I camp mid and bot until we score dragon and a tower while clearing buffs for myself/mid/steal.

As for TSM, Theoddone's carry style allows him to play like that. His elise is amazing and he always plays champions that synergize well with the team so that he can get fed early. He's one of their most valuable players and plays champions that are scary at all points of the game.
