    Car for under $5000?

I'm thinking of buying a car that will get me from California to Connecticut without giving me much trouble, for less than $5000.
Any recommendations on a specific model?

    edit:
people are telling me that I could get a nice japanese car for a lot less than $5000, and save money :)
that makes me want something with a custom body... lol

any recs on websites/dealers that sell them would be fine :D
    having trouble on craigslist :p

Craigslist is your answer my friend. Craig has a huge list of cars unless you live in a ghost town.

    Car for under $5000?

It's all in the condition of the vehicle, and the inspection you do of it before you buy it. Brand REALLY means nothing nowaways. They're all built on the same essentials.

I'd recommend a Honda Civic, those things run FOREVER. My friend previously owned one that ran for 296K miles, and had been around since '97.

Any old toyota will serve you well.

    Your best brands are:
Toyota - Runs for a long time, safe and reliable
Honda - Runs for a long time
Nissan - Runs very well and for a long time

The plus factor is that all of these cars can cost under $5000. So you will have extra money left over.
Craigslist is your friend if you're not a car dealer, otherwise I would go to a public car auction.

Personally, I'd just go with a nice Crown Victoria. They have very strong engines, built to last, pretty tough. You can get a really good one from 2500-5000, I'd stay away from the ones selling for 1500 or less, though. That'll get you there and back with no problems, and they have good fuel economy. My friends crown vic (it's a 1995 ex-police interceptor) literally gets 30mpg on highway, which is pretty good...

I picked up a 2000 Cadillac Catera with under 120k miles last weekend for 2,000 cash. Car runs great. Just have to look around.

    Car for under $5000?

In this day and age its not to hard to find a decent car for under $3k, let alone $5k. I suggest looking through ads on craigs list and finding a vehicle with decent mpg, tires, and won't fall apart. The cylinders in the engine don't matter to much for a road trip, as once you get up to speed on a high way you won't be slowing down much, and usually just ends up costing more anyways.

    Car for under $5000?

I"m asking for a specific model recommendation.
how am I supposed to search for something that I don't even know of?

and thanks for the honda/toyota/nissan/crown recommendations guys... but civics (in my opinion) are really ugly, and I'd rather die that be caught driving one of those :/

Maybe if it had a custom body kit? lol

maybe I'll try that cadillac; cadillacs are sexy no matter what :)

once again, thanks for all the friendly answers!

maybe I'll come knocking on your doors with a couple of beers next year... who knows

Toyota Corolla/Camry. Things run forever, only things that require maintenance are tires/spark plugs/oil change.
